The legendary and infamous M4A4 Howl skin is undoubtedly one of the most illustrious, expensive, and rarest CS: GO skins available today. What makes this skin so special is its interesting backstory. When the Howl skin’s initial version was submitted to Valve by its original designer, it had a comparable, but distinct design to the one we know and love today.
Following the inclusion of the original Howl skin in the game, a digital artist filed a DMCA complaint against Valve and the creator of the Howl skin, alleging that the latter had wrongfully used one of his designs in the creation of the Howl skin.
Valve investigated the matter and discovered that the accusations were accurate. Valve employed an interesting strategy to rectify what was wrong. Instead of erasing all of the Howl items from the game, they were replaced. Developers added M4A4 | Desert-Strike to the Huntsman Case in lieu of the M4A4 | Howl, and they ceased generating new copies of the Howl skins and stickers altogether.
They updated the designs being sold on the game/community market and replaced them with new artwork designed by Valve designers. Additionally, they created a new category of rarity called Contraband — sounds a bit tongue-in-cheek to us!
