RPGS are just the best, but really immersive ones are those that have a first-person perspective. It’s that extra sense of feeling up close and personal in the game that just appeals to us. With that in mind, today, we’re about to go down the proverbial rabbit hole and dig up our personal favorites that best represent this niche. Now, then, let’s get going, shall we?
Which First-Person RPGS Are Worth Checking Out?
Well, there are surprisingly a lot of great first contenders that can nab a spot on today’s list of first-person RPGS. However, we’re cutting down the number to an even 6, not too big nor too short. Naturally, we’re gonna pick the ones that we feel offer something unique and have replay value that makes them stand out.
However, any first-person roleplaying title that gives the option to switch to a third-person perspective is not gonna make the cut. That means no Skyrim, Fallout, or the like. Capeesh? Good! Now, let’s kick off this party already! Here we go!
6.) Prey
We’re kicking off the list of exciting first-person RPGS with a personal favorite, Prey. This magnificent game has such a unique game design that everything still holds up really well even today. The sheer amount of depth in the gameplay is beyond staggering. The biggest highlight is the number of paths you can take to complete missions and side-objectives.
Prey is not just a game; it’s an experience. You’ll wanna check every nook and cranny of the space station to see which paths are available to you. Sometimes, it pays to have an inquisitive mind. That said, watch out for the enemies, too. The alien life forms are tricky and will most likely catch you off guard, especially on your first playthrough. Luckily, you’ll have access to a whole host of abilities.
It’s the different builds in Prey that give you plenty of replay value and will allow you to open previously blocked paths. The intrigue of the story is an absolute highlight; you’ll be unable to get the whole picture until you’ve completed the game multiple times. Let’s just say Prey is one of those incredible RPGS for people who love juicy storylines, kind of like our favorite mystery games.
5.) Dying Light
We’re going with one of the best zombie games in recent memory as the next pick for the best first-person RPGS. We’re talking about the incomparable Dying Light, yep, the very first one; it’s arguably better, definitely more popular than its sequel. You gotta understand that at the launch of Dying Light, it was something so unique and attention-grabbing it quickly caught traction.
The parkour-style traversal refined to a tee feels great. The meaningful upgrade system, an exploration element that rewards for taking the initiative, it was all there in Dying Light. Aside from those outstanding features, Dying Light also had one of the most brilliant enemy A-I implementation in all of gaming. The undead zombies, their variety, and the threat they posed were nerve-wracking stuff.
Like no joke, we still remember getting the pants scared off us when nighttime in Dying Light would come. The game’s sinister ambiance and surprises always kept us on our toes. It’s these traits, on top of the storytelling and RPG-esque branching paths, that just roped us in. We gotta give it up to Dying Light for being one of the most memorable first-person RPGS we’ve ever played.
4.) Kingdom Come Deliverance
The next one we’ve got for you is, surprisingly, the only fantasy title on today’s list of awesome first-person RPGS . In fact, it’s one of the best medieval-themed games, too. The gritty realism and immersion of Kingdom Come: Deliverance is second to none. There’s no fancy magic or supernatural elements in the game, just plain fantasy which is just delightfully refreshing, honestly.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance doesn’t hold back the difficulty; it’s a steep learning curve to find your bearings in the game. You’ll have to weigh every decision carefully, for there are consequences behind every choice. Factions vying for political ground will recruit or come after you with hostile intentions, depending on where your character’s allegiances are. This is one of the best features.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a unique gem among first-person RPG, which should be fully appreciated for its originality. The game’s combat is another especially noteworthy thing. You get better through practice, but there’s no super skill or ability to rely on; you just gotta master parries and flanks. It’s this gripping gameplay and highly compelling narrative that we recommend it highly.
3.) The Outer Worlds
For the halfway point on our list of epic first-person RPGS, we’re going with The Outer Worlds. This game can easily hang among the best space games around. You get some really cool shooter elements to the gameplay, which is always nice. But the thing that really caught our eye was the dialogue system in The Outer Worlds; let’s face it, talking mornonically is just way too funny to skip.
The way the plot can shift with your pick of the dialogue and impact your relationship with your NPC companions is also pretty darn great to see. The Outer Worlds also boats the tactical time dilation mechanic. It gives you time to study enemy tactics and use the appropriate skills to dispatch/deal with them. These innovative highlights of The Outer Worlds make it easy to recommend the game.
Another really nifty way The Outer Worlds stands out among the upper echelon of first-person RPGS is the flaw mechanic. Depending on how you play the game, whatever you do wrong the most or mess up will have a negative effect on your character. This helps create a tailored experience for everyone and will no doubt make every playthrough of The Outer World astonishingly unique.
2.) The Borderlands Series
For the runner-up spot on our list of fantastic first-person RPGS we’ve got not one game but a whooping series of games. Specifically, we’re talking about the Borderlands series. These looter shooter games are the pinnacle of fun and just all-around rollicking good time. The absurd visuals with the cartoony graphics and crass humor, everything just meshes well sublimely.
The Borderlands series is known for its multitude of character builds and awesome, frantic action. You gotta be on the lookout for enemies, the bandits, skags, and even the military, as well as the Hyperion mercs that are coming after our unique heroes, the vault hunters. Every character has unique skill trees with some really spectacular action skills that you can use in a variety of ways.
Our favorite part is grabbing a bunch of buddies to play in split-screen co-op cause that’s when the games are at their finest. Nothing like the feeling of running and gunning powerful enemies, especially the ludicrous bosses, to give that power fantasy feeling. Take our for it: Looter shooter RPGS like the Borderlands series are some of the best first-person games you’ll ever play.
1.) Cyberpunk 2077 – The Crown Jewel Of First-Person RPGS
We’re closing off our list of top-notch first-person RPGS with the obvious choice, Cyberpunk 2077. Let’s face it: there was never any serious competition for the top spot; Cyberpunk 2077 is the biggest comeback story of the last decade in the gaming sphere. The team CD Projekt Red did a wonderful job of winning everyone over, despite some hiccups initially that left a sour taste.
Thankfully, what the devs did right, they excelled at. Giving players one of the most polished sci-fi RPGS ever. Players have unbelievably in-depth customization options, and character creation is the king. Aside from those traits, Cyberpunk 2077 does a wonderful job of giving a mature edge to storytelling we’ve not seen in a long while. The freedom to go about exploring is just superb.
Cyberpunk 2077 shapes the narrative in surprising twists depending on the protagonist’s background, perks, and choices you make for them along the way. Sometimes, new opportunities open up depending on how you go about things. Completing quests immediately might not always be the wise option. It’s these kinds of touches that propel Cyberpunk 2077 to the top of the list of best first-person RPGS.
