Halo Infinite has been released for around 6 months now and with it came a whole new arsenal of weapons for players to master. The VK78 Commando Rifle is one of these weapons and can be difficult to use effectively at first. Players familiar with the Halo franchise might find this weapon works similarly to the DMR (Designated Marksman Rifle) from past games. The major difference is the VK78 Commando Rifle is fully automatic.
This weapon is good at all ranges of combat, but especially close to medium range. However, what makes this new weapon in the Halo series so hard to master is how much recoil and bloom the weapon has. If you can hit every shot on an opponent to pop their shields and end it with a headshot, then this weapon’s TTK (Time To Kill) can be quite good. But that’s not going to happen too often unless you practice a lot with it.
This article is going to cover some general information about the weapon as well as give some tips to help you master this weapon.
VK78 Commando Rifle General Information
- Manufacturer: Vakara
- Ammunition Type: Kinetic
- Magazine Size: 20-round
- Rate of fire: Fully automatic, slow rate of fire
- Time To Kill: Seven shots to deplete shields. One headshot (no shields) or 5 body shots (no shields).
The VK78 Commando Rifle is a kinetic tactical precision rifle that is usable at any range. This weapon is also effective at long ranges thanks to the built-in sight that allows for zooming capabilities. It is a fully automatic rifle that fires 20 rounds per magazine. The VK78 Commando Rifle has a high amount of recoil and bloom but does moderate damage.
Kinetic weapons in Halo Infinite are great for doing damage to unshielded enemies. This weapon is great for unshielded enemies as well, one headshot to an unshielded is an instant kill. If you are up against an enemy that has their shields up, it will take seven shots to deplete them.
Considering this weapon isn’t a power weapon, it usually spawns in multiple locations. These locations appear on both sides of the map so each team can grab one. They can appear all over the map on Big Team Battle matches though.
Best Maps To Use the VK78 Commando Rifle On in Halo Infinite
Recharge
Recharge is a great map for the VK78 Commando Rifle. This map is an arena map that features a lot of corridors and tight spaces, which is perfect for the VK78 Commando Rifle. Recharge has a lot of higher and lower levels as well. If you are in a ranked match, you can find the VK78 Commando Rifle on the upper levels looking down the middle area of the map. Both of these spots are great for trading shots with other players across the map.
Streets
Streets is another good map for this weapon. The VK78 Commando Rifle can be found in a bunker on one side of the map overlooking the power weapon in the middle of the map. Streets have some open areas that can have some good medium-range firefights. Some good tips on this map when using this weapon is to find the high ground to pick people off. Sitting at an end of one street is also a good idea to catch people running to points or coming up the stairs.
Bazaar
Bazaar is a symmetrical map that has a lot of open space for this weapon to shine. You will most likely be doing battles from across the map and from long range. Thus, aiming down the sights is a must if you want to trade shots from each side of the map. It is a good strategy to have a Battle Rifle or plasma weapon that does good shield damage and then swap to it the Commando Rifle to get the headshot.
Should You Use the Commando Rifle on Big Team Battle Maps in Halo Infinite?
While this weapon does appear on every Big Team Battle Map, it is usually better to use the Battle Rifle instead. Unless you can get much closer to an enemy. This weapon works from longer ranges, but you will likely get beamed from across the map the players using a Sniper, Shock Rifle, or Stalker Rifle. All of these weapons outclass the VK78 Commando Rifle from long ranges. I’m not saying don’t use it, but Big Team Battle matches offer a lot more weapon options to choose from. If you can close the distance a bit, then by all means use this weapon as you see fit.

Tips and Tricks on How to Use the Commando Rifle in Halo Infinite
The following tips are just general tips to know that may help you in the long run. The best way to get better with a weapon is by practicing in training mode or completing the weapon drills. These game modes will help you get familiar with any weapon you need.
Fire In Short Bursts
The VK78 Commando Rifle has a lot of recoil and bloom, so it is important to fire single shots or in short bursts when engaging enemies. By using short bursts, you will be able to control the recoil better and stay on target.
Fire Automatic At Close Range
If you find yourself at close range with an opponent, firing in short bursts isn’t going to cut it. Don’t be afraid to hold down the fire button to go fully automatic. Once their shield is depleted then it is time to go in for the kill with a headshot. Or you can finish them with a melee attack. At close range, bloom and recoil won’t matter too much as your target is much easier to hit.
Find A Good Spot
This weapon works best at medium range, so find a good spot on the map where you can see most of the battlefield. From this spot, you can pick off enemies one by one without having to worry about getting flanked. But this is true for all tactical-based weapons.
Aim Down The Sights of the Commando Rifle
The VK78 Commando Rifle has a built-in sight that allows for zooming capabilities. This is helpful when engaging enemies at long range. When you are zoomed in, your shots will be more accurate and you will have a better chance of scoring headshots. This is especially true when in combat from long ranges on Big Team Battle maps.
