Retro gamers searching for awesome Sega Saturn games to play are about to have a field day. Today’s list concerns the powerful Sega Saturn home console and the ranking of its offerings. After compiling retro lists for other systems, we immediately turn our attention to Sega.
While it’s doubtful Sega will enter the console market again; we’re still hoping for a Dreamcast 2! Until such a day arrives, we’ll focus on the Sega Saturn games for now.
Our Ranking System for the Best Sega Saturn Games
Before jumping into the top-tier Sega Saturn games list, let’s set a few rules to clarify things. Today’s list is heavily inclined toward our preferences and personal enjoyment. Basically, what we find enjoyable, might not be true for others, and vice-versa.
So, in a sense, this is a disclosure that a lot of the obvious choices might not find a place in today’s list. Here are our requirements for game selection.
- The Sega Saturn games we’ll consider should have fun and colorfully vibrant art style that helps them stand out. We won’t settle for anything less.
- Secondly, gameplaywise, the Sega Saturn games must have intuitive controls and engaging game mechanics. If a game doesn’t play well or there are issues that ruin the enjoyment, we won’t pick them. However, sometimes we might look past a couple of nuisances, but the problematic game won’t receive a higher ranking even if we consider it.
Which 10 Sega Saturn Games Are the Best?
Well, now that everything is on the table, we can jump into our list without delay. Today’s selection is fantastic, with some no-brainers definitely present, but then, we’ll also surprise our readers. We hope you enjoy the ride, so sit back and grab a drink. There are ten slots to fill and plenty of terrific Sega Saturn games to choose from. Alright, let’s begin! Here we go!
10. Vandal Hearts – The Underrated JRPG Deserves More Love As Other Brilliant Sega Saturn Games
We’re kicking things off with a bang! Our first pick to open the list of top Sega Saturn games debuts with Vandal Hearts. Despite its obscurity nowadays, it’s got a wonderful vibe to it that can still compete with the best fantasy games of today.
Not only is the storyline intriguing enough to hold the player’s interest, but the gameplay also requires complex strategizing. So if you don’t pay attention, you’ll fail. The combat situations in Vandal Hearts present a variety of challenges. In fact, you’ll have to think about every move and achieve objectives to progress the plot forward.
You can’t button-mash your way out of a situation. Vandal Hearts is one of those Sega Saturn games that often gets overlooked for its more popular counterpart, the Fire Emblem series. We wish this series sees a revival; it’ll be an instant buy from us.
9. X-Men: Children Of The Atom – We Love the Eye-Catching Art Style of this Fun Fighting Game
Capcom’s first foray into the Marvel lineup of games was a fun little gem known as X-Men: Children Of The Atom. Aside from the obvious comic-book roots of the character designs, the game’s colorful environments are a visual treat. X-Men: Children Of The Atom is one of the most gorgeous video games on the Sega Saturn.
We remember botting up the game to gawk at the character select screen for an embarrassingly long time. Maybe it was the ladies on the roster? Perhaps, anyway, X-Men: Children Of The Atom has highly intuitive combos and a similar gameplay style as Street Fighter II. Each character’s specific X-ability is a cinematic spectacle, especially Cyclop’s optic blast power or Psylocke’s psychic blasts.
We’re forever grateful for Sega Saturn to have been blessed with one of the most exciting fighting games ever in X-Men: Children Of The Atom. If you like games with Marvel characters, our ranking of every PS3 Spider-man game has plenty of options for you.
8. Resident Evil – One of The Progenitors of Survival Horror is A Classic Worth Playing
Next up on our list of top Sega Saturn games, we have one of the torchbearers of the survival horror genre. The original Resident Evil game is iconic for a bunch of reasons. The chief one is its ability to deliver a chilling narrative. Resident Evil is great at creating ambiance and atmosphere that will immerse players into the plot. The tight corridors of the mansion’s settings create a sense of dread.
When you add in scarce ammo and inventory space, plus a variety of abominations aside from the zombies, you’ve got a recipe for one of the most engrossing games ever. If you’re a horror game junkie like us, you’ll thoroughly enjoy our picks for the best horror adventure games like Until Dawn.
Sega Saturn was lucky enough to have a port of Resident Evil that performs and plays brilliantly. In fact, Resident Evil has also got dual tyrants, which is exclusive to the Sega Saturn version of the game.
7. Mega Man 8 – Capcom’s Mascot Plays Fantastically in this Slick Side-Scrolling Action Game
Capcom’s signature blue mascot, not unlike a certain Sega fuzzball, is always a welcome addition to any console. With Mega Man 8’s release on Sega Saturn, a lot of folks were feeling that the games were more of the same. Admittedly, it’s true for the most part, but we’re on the side of the fence that uses the hey if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it approach.
The action is intense, and the animation is smooth, plus you can use multiple weapons simultaneously; it’s epic! Oh, and Mega Man 8 has got plenty of upgrades to the titular hero’s arsenal and moveset. You’ll jump, slide, swim, and even charge up the mega blaster to unleash serious damage on bosses and enemies.
Mega Man 8 is one of the top-tier platforming games on the Sega Saturn; it’s also got exclusive bosses like the Woodman. If you’re into such titles, you’ll love our selection of platformer games.
6. Virtua Cop 2 – Freestyle Shooting is Still As Fun As it Was Back in the Day
Alright, capping off the first half of the top-tier Sega Saturn games list is Virtua Cop 2. Not much to say about it, aside from it’s freaking awesome! You play in sequences with a short timeframe where you need to shoot at hostile targets and avoid shooting civilians. That’s the game, now, of course, there’s a story, but let’s be honest, as a kid, you just wanna shoot enemies!
The gameplay of Virtua Cop 2 has a bit of layer to it. Players can earn extra points if they shoot at non-lethal parts of the hostile enemies. The points multiplier significantly allows the racking up of points for subduing enemies by shooting their firing hand, legs, or anything that won’t kill them. Long story short, Virtual Cop 2 is an amazing shooter game on Sega Saturn; definitely worth your time.
5. Panzer Dragoon Saga – The Most Ambitious Sega Saturn Game that You Need to Check Out
Ushering us into the upper half of our list of top Sega Saturn games, we have Panzer Dragoon Saga. We sincerely hope this JRPG gem sees the light of day on new-gen consoles or even a remake. Anyway, Panzer Dragoon Saga is perhaps Sega’s most ambitious JRPG to date. At the time, they were heavy hitters and were looking for a breakout game to compete against Final Fantasy.
While Sega’s ambitions never truly materialized, what players got was a once-in-a-lifetime JRPG. Panzer Dragoon Saga opens up the game world, allowing complete freedom to explore areas, unlike the previous entries in the series.
The combat in Panzer Dragoon Saga surpasses other JRPGS by a landslide, and it’s a shame that the game is exclusive to Sega Saturn. Players must solve puzzles, complete quests, and take in the gorgeous vistas of the fantasy setting in the game. Panzer Dragoon Saga deserves another chance to shine, so Sega! Take our money, and get to it!
4. Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night – A Timeless Classic that Won’t Ever Age, Just Like Dracula
Next up on our list of top Sega Saturn games, we have one that needs no introduction, Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night. The definitive vampire game is an ever-green, all-time greatest hit from Konami. The action is slick and intense, the movement of characters feels dynamic, and the breathtaking visuals are simply ecstatic. The game’s combat forces players to think and strategize on the fly.
For us, there are only a handful of top-notch vampire games that can top Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night. The gameplay of Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night on the Sega Saturn makes it one of the most addictive games ever. The hard-hitting attacks feel satisfying to land, and the secrets behind obstacles that encourage replayability and revisiting previous levels, are magnificent.
Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night is by far one of the greatest Sega Saturn games of all time. This fact is only amplified when you play the game with its crisp visuals and Bloody Tears soundtrack running in the background.
3. King Of Fighters ’97 – The Classic 2D Fighting Game Series is Full of Wild and Memorable Characters
Okay, this one is a personal favorite, and a lot of fighting game fans will tend to agree with us as well. Sega Saturn has no shortage of fighting games, but King Of Fighters ’97 is a different beast entirely. The anime-inspired influence of its characters and the wacky attack animations of the characters make King Of Fighters ’97 feel special. You can’t help but want to try the game after seeing it.
King Of Fighters ’97 establishes itself as a serious contender in the realm of fighting game giants like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. The Sega Saturn classic game offers plenty of originality with characters that have wonky backstories and personalities. You can’t help but feel intrigued by their appearance and attack styles. A personal favorite is Choi, who is absolutely hilarious in King Of Fighters ’97.
2. Sonic & Knuckles – Sega’s Own Mascot is Our Runner-Up Choice for the Best Sega Saturn Game
For the runner-up pick on our list of top Sega Saturn games, we have the dual combo of Sonic & Knuckles. It’s fitting that a game starring Sega’s mascot ranks so high since the list concerns a Sega home console.
Anyway, in Sonic & Knuckles, players can play as either of the two protagonists, and both play distinctly. Not only that, but each one’s part in the narrative is also unique, with different cutscenes. The gameplay is quite fun, which is par for the course in Sonic games on the Sega Saturn. We especially enjoy gliding through the air as Knuckles, while Sonic’s speed is always a treat to experience.
The boss fights are surprisingly more in-depth. Players have to think about where they’re maneuvering Sonic or Knuckles during the fight, or it’s game over. In a nutshell, Sonic & Knuckles is terrific, so play its remasters on modern consoles.
1. X-Men: Children Of The Atom – Our Favorite Sega Saturn Game
Make way for the best Sega Saturn game of all time, X-Men vs. Street Fighter. This is the crossover dreams are made of, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. On one end, you have Street Fighter, and on the other, Marvel’s most popular team, the X-Men. Pitting the character’s together was every 90s kid’s wish fulfillment.
Players can play as any of their favorite characters and answer the burning questions of who would win. Whether it’s Ryu vs. Wolverine, Blanka vs. Juggernaut, or Psylocke vs. Cammi, you can play the match and find out the winner. X-Men vs. Street Fighter on the Sega Saturn is the foundation for future collaborations between Capcom and Marvel, namely the Marvel Vs. Capcom games.
Okay, we’ll admit we’re fanboying here, but we have a soft spot for games with Marvel characters. X-Men vs. Street Fighter, for us, is the best Sega Saturn game ever. The gameplay is incredibly addictive but challenging to master.
