There are numerous items in Risk of Rain 2 that have effects ranging from minor to game-changing. Blue Items in Risk of Rain 2, also known as Lunar Items, cost Lunar Coins to unveil and are the only items in the game that could potentially ruin your run. Lunar Items have strong upsides and downsides, so knowing which Blue Items can ruin your run is highly recommended.

Not all of these blue items are worth obtaining, and some are so terrible no player seriously recommends ever trying to get them except under specific circumstances. We will not mention any Heresy Items since these items revolve around changing your abilities, which can be better or worse depending on the Survivor you are playing. Beads of Fealty is a Lunar Item with no upside or downside, instead being used to take you to a hidden area without immediately ending the game upon obliterating, so we won’t be covering that either.

Here are our picks for the 5 worst Blue Items that you should never use in Risk of Rain 2.

    5. Focused Convergence

Focused Convergence is a strange item that sacrifices half of the charging range for all teleporter-like utilities in the game in exchange for charging roughly 130% of the average speed. This item has a stronger downside than its upside, and having less range for teleporter charging is an increasingly worse effect the longer you spend in a run.

Focused Convergence also affects the Pillars in Commencement, the Cell Vents in the Void Fields, and the Void Signals in Void Locus. This makes it harder to survive and complete these events, but the charging speed is not worth the small area you need to sit inside for any of these sections. While an argument can be made for taking this for the Teleporter Events, if you’re doing well, you would be harming yourself if you use this blue item in any alternative Teleporter-like events in Risk of Rain 2.

Focused Convergence is good when looping if you’re already quickly sweeping through Teleporter Events. It will remove a good portion of the enemies you would’ve encountered after beating the boss.

    4. Corpsebloom

Corpsebloom drastically changes how the player receives healing for a strangely weak upside. All healing is applied over time rather than immediately, but you heal for twice as much. This item functions like a cheap Rejuvenation Rack, with the same function without the extreme downside.

With this change, you can only heal for a maximum of 10% of your health per second, making it highly likely to result in your death. The regeneration effect this item provides forces you to wait 10 seconds at maximum healing strength to fully get your health back, which is far too long to wait for a multiplier on your healing.

The player’s health bar also has a feature that many newer players don’t know about: One-Shot protection. Taking this Blue Item in Risk of Rain 2 makes chip damage potentially lethal. This is because you have to wait every second for the benefit of healing to come into effect.

When you are at full health, if you are hit by any damage source that would usually kill you, you are dropped to only 10% of your maximum HP instead of taking you out in one go. This means if you’re fighting a Wandering Vagrant when they explode, a single shot from a Wisp or a Beetle could remove your One-Shot Protection without you being able to regenerate it back in time.

One character who suffers from this drawback is REX, who uses their health to use some of their abilities. If you take Corpsebloom on REX, it makes their downsides twice as bad. We highly recommend avoiding this item, even if it may seem tempting in the early game.

The Character Who Suffers the Most from this Blue Item in Risk of Rain 2

The character who suffers the most from this drawback would have to be REX, who damages themselves in order to function. Taking Corpsebloom in your Risk of Rain 2 REX build makes it practically impossible to sustain in fights since they constantly are forced to regenerate health with every shot.

One of REX’s most well-known tricks is to alternate their primary and secondary since they can be cast as soon as using the other ability. Seed Barrage takes 15% of REX’s current health, and you are usually casting Seed Barrage multiple times every second. This means you would have to wait at least two seconds between uses in order not to lose all your health.

Stacking this Risk of Rain 2 blue item halves the amount of healing you are able to obtain every second, meaning even though the potency gets added to by 100%, each subsequent stack of Corpsebloom makes the downside even more potent. The only time this Blue Item would function properly would be if you have high defenses, high health, and a small amount of healing that isn’t strong, to begin with. The longer you spend in a run, the worse Corpsebloom gets.

    3. Mercurial Rachis

Mercurial Rachis is an item with no downsides written on its description. Still, it can be deceiving to newer players who are unaware of this Blue Item’s capabilities in Risk of Rain 2. The item description says that the Mercurial Rachis creates a Ward of Power in a random location nearby that boosts both ally and enemy damage by 50% when standing in it.

The main reason why this blue item should be avoided is that the effect is randomly spawned, and ranged enemies can stand in this zone to strike you down at a range, while Survivors are encouraged to move constantly.

At its best, this Blue Item would spawn the buffing zone next to you where no enemies contest it, allowing you to gain free damage for a short time. At its worst, Mercurial Rachis spawns in a location where you can’t stand, and it grants a boss or perilous enemy 50% more damage. We never willingly choose to grab this item, for the chances of the Mercurial Rachis turning against you is more likely than helping.

    2. Purity

Purity can spell the end of a run very quickly if you have the misfortune of accidentally picking this Blue Item up. This Risk of Rain 2 blue item lowers all skill cooldowns by two seconds but gives you negative luck. Luck determines how many times you reroll the chance of an effect occurring, being 0 without modifiers. Having a negative Luck effect roughly reduces most items’ chances of activating down to 1% if they aren’t at 100% without luck.

The only way to counteract Purity to save your run is to find a Cleansing Pool or obtain a 57 Leaf Clover, which cancels out Purity. Overall the upside of having more cooldown reduction on your skills doesn’t make it nearly worth losing all your proc chance.

There are so many Items in the game that benefits from striking enemies to activate, and having this item makes a good portion of them useless. AtG Missile Mk.1 always has a 10% chance to activate no matter how many stacks you have, and having negative luck makes the chance equivalent to 1%.

    1. Defiant Gouge – The Worst Risk of Rain 2 Blue Item

Defiant Gouge is the only Blue item in Risk of Rain 2 that offers no upside. This item causes any shrine in Risk of Rain 2 you activate to summon extra enemies, which scales over time. Using any Shrine of Blood could instantly kill you by spawning Elites in your face, or every bad roll on a Shrine of Chance would swarm you with increasingly hard-to-defeat hordes of enemies.

Some can argue that this item is ok for the early game, or if you have a godlike run, the extra enemies don’t matter. Still spawning more enemies for no upside other than gold, which becomes significantly easier to obtain by the late game, makes this item the worst Blue Item in Risk of Rain 2.

Final Verdict – The Worst Blue Item in Risk of Rain 2

Overall there are a lot of other Blue items or Lunar Items that have a significant upside that makes the trade-off completely worth it. Even the Heresy items can be great depending on the Survivor who obtains them or if you want to unlock and transform into the Heretic in Risk of Rain 2.

There are definitely other Blue Items that didn’t make the list that aren’t always worth getting, like Stone Flux Pauldron, but most of those items even have some rare situations where they can be proven useful.
