Gunner is one of the four playable Dwarfs in Deep Rock Galactic. Gunner is the most straightforward class but still has a handful of unique primary weapons that set him apart from the other dwarfs. Each class brings different strengths and team utility to every mission, and Gunner brings heavy offense and defensive utility to combat swarms of bugs on Hoxxus.

Gunner has three different primary weapons in Deep Rock Galactic:

    • “Lead Storm” Powered Minigun
    • “Thunderhead” Heavy Autocannon
    • “Hurricane” Guide Rocket System

Note: Before we dive into each primary weapon for Gunner, it’s worth noting that Overclocks suggest different adjustments to mods to utilize the stat changes that overclocks bring. If you equip an Overclock that drastically changes its stats, we recommend changing a few mods to compensate for some downsides.

    “Lead Storm” Powered Minigun

All three of Gunner’s primary weapons in Deep Rock Galactic are considered heavy weapons since this class’ theming brings the team’s biggest weapon. The Lead storm minigun Is the first weapon any player picking Gunner will have access to. Like any minigun, this massive weapon has a little spin-up time and slows you down while firing. The spread of the Lead Storm lowers with sustained fire but overheats after a while.

Unlike the rest of Gunner’s primary guns, this weapon draws directly from your ammo reserves and requires no reloading; the only thing you must manage is overheating the gun. Some Overlocks support heat build-up like Burning Hell, which causes Gunner to violently vent all the build-up heat in front of him for extra damage but causes the gun to gain heat faster.

As for the Minigun weapons setups on Gunner in Deep Rock Galactic, we recommend primarily recommend taking these mods for non-overclock builds:

    • Improved Platform Stability or Improved Motor
    • High-Velocity Rounds
    • Hardened Rounds
    • Variable Chamber Pressure
    • Hot Bullets or Cold as The Grave

This simple weapon configuration keeps to the strengths of the minigun; it allows you to break through armor and have as much damage output as possible. If you prefer the ability to clear hordes faster than to shred armor, swap Hardened Rounds with Blow through Rounds.

The Best Overclocks for Gunner’s Lead Storm Weapon in Deep Rock Galactic

As for preferred Gunner weapon overclocks in Deep Rock Galactic, we chose the following Overclocks to be the best for the Lead Storm:

    • A Little More Oomph!
    • Compact Feed Mechanism
    • Lead Storm

A Little More Oomph adds more damage and reduces the spin-up time by a small amount. Compact Feed Mechanism adds more ammo in exchange for a lower fire rate. Lastly, Lead Storm removes the chances for your gun to stun, gives you no movement while firing, and increases your damage by a lot.

“Thunderhead” Heavy Autocannon Gunner Weapon in Deep Rock Galactic

The Thunderhead is a heavy autocannon that functions like a two-handed anti-air cannon. This gun prefers more AOE splash damage and a slower fire rate than a stream of bullets than the Lead Storm. The pros of using this gunner weapon are the natural splash damage with each shot; it makes clearing hoards much more manageable with no overheating, but it lacks range and requires reloading.

For standard weapon builds, we recommend the following:

    • High-Capacity Magazine
    • Lighter Barrel Assembly
    • High-Velocity Rounds
    • Penetrating Rounds
    • Feedback Loop

This primary weapon configuration for Gunner is mainly a combination to enable the mod Feedback Loop. That mod increases the weapon’s damage when at the max rate of fire. With no need to worry about overheating, you can quickly reach the max fire rate with this setup to melt hordes of bugs.

The Best Overclocks for The Thunderhead Autocannon

The Thunderhead is one of the few guns in Deep Rock Galactic that doesn’t have any lacking overclocks, but there are still a few we recommend over the rest. The three best overclocks we prefer for Gunner’s Thunderhead weapon in Deep Rock Galactic are:

    • Big Bertha
    • Neurotoxin Payload
    • Carpet Bomber

Big Bertha increases the weapon’s damage significantly but lowers max ammo, rate of fire, and magazine size. Neurotoxin Payload reduces your base and area damage but gives you a 50% chance to apply neurotoxin to your enemies. Lastly, Carpet Bomber adds more area damage and a slightly bigger effect radius but lowers base damage.

“Hurricane” Guided Rocket System for Gunner in DRG

Gunner’s newest primary weapon is a portable rocket launcher with a laser pointer that allows each rocket to be manually guided. Compared to the Lead Storm, which has excellent single target damage, and the Thunderhead’s great AOE, this weapon combines both with better range than both.

The pros of using the Hurricane primary weapon allow you to manually guide your rockets and give Gunner more range than any other primary weapon in Deep Rock Galactic. Still, it lacks direct damage, and used in close quarters combat is dangerous.

The Hurricane allows you to deal with long-range AOE damage and the unique tracking allows for less misuse of ammunition. We recommend the following build for non-Overclock setups:

    • Increased Blast Radius
    • Bigger Jet Engine
    • Improved Feed Mechanism
    • Zip Fuel
    • Napalm-Infused Rounds

The Best Overclocks for Gunner’s Hurricane Weapon in Deep Rock Galactic

This primary weapon setup for Gunner allows you to strengthen your swarm clearing potential with increased AOE and adds heat damage to your rockets. Heat damage is great for taking out Rival Tech machines like The Nemesis in Deep Rock Galactic.

Most of the Overclocks for this weapon also encourage maximizing its area damage rather than its direct single target damage. It makes for an excellent swarm weapon but lacks effectiveness in killing unique bugs.

The Overlocks we recommend are as follows:

    • Jet Fuel Homebrew
    • Salvo Module
    • Plasma Burster Missiles

Jet Fuel Homebrew increases direct damage and starts each rocket at its max speed but reduces AOE damage, radius, and ammo. This is the primary weapon Overclock for Gunner players in Deep Rock Galactic who still wish to amp up this weapon’s direct damage. Yet, we recommend the other primary guns if you are looking for single target damage.

Plasma Burster Missiles slightly lower all forms of damage and some ammo but increase the turn rate and add plasma bursters to each missile. Plasma Burster Missiles are like Engineer’s Plasma Burster grenades, making every rocket explode multiple times with plasma damage.

Lastly, the Salvo Module gives the Hurricane an extra function to fire up to nine missiles like a shotgun blast. Hold down the trigger to charge up to nine unguided rockets, which gives the Hurricane a great close-quarters option with no downside.

Wrap Up Our Deep Rock Galactic Gunner Primary Weapons Guide

That’s all Gunner’s primary weapons and some of the better Overclocks for each gun. Each Primary works to fit a particular playstyle. Even if you don’t like how a primary weapon feels, try each gun with various Overclocks to get the most out of what each weapon offers.

If you are new to the game, you will start to unlock Overclocks after you Promote; you can find our guide on all the benefits of Promoting in Deep Rock Galactic here. As always, rock and stone, fellow dwarfs!
