Greetings! My fellow horror game fanatics, today we’ll be answering (at least trying to anyway) the mystery of How Silas became a Werewolf in The Quarry. FULL DISCLOSURE! We will dive into spoilers territory, so if you haven’t played the game, turn back now! But if you have played it, great!
If the game isn’t your type, and you’d rather know the spoilers, we’ll catch you up to speed on the story. We’ll also discuss The Quarry’s most speculative plot points. Finally, we’ll conclude our findings of the titular puzzling query regarding Silas’s werewolf transformation. Ready? Let’s begin!
What Is The (Hackett) Quarry?
Hackett Quarry is a popular camping destination in the game’s fictional setting. It’s where the action happens throughout the story, from cheesy camping counselors behaving like teenagers to the murder spree that follows. It belongs to the Hackett family, who have a connection to the main threat (Silas, the werewolf) everyone faces.
How Someone Becomes A Werewolf Like Silas?
The real reason for the werewolves even existing is the curse over the Hackett household. Players learn about the history of the Hackett family and how someone like Silas becomes a werewolf with the curse.
When the young children of the Hackett lineage, a few years before the events of the game, tried burning down a gypsy’s circus Penn, the woman’s anger triggered a curse on them by having Silas bite them. Anyone bitten by a werewolf is affected by the curse becomes a werewolf like Silas. Later, we find out that the curse on the Hackett family will remain until the original host of the curse, Silas, is killed.
Who Is Silas?
Right, so Silas is the visually distinct werewolf with white skin. Silas’s paleness is due to the albinism in his genetics that transfers whenever he becomes a werewolf.
The narrator of the events in The Quarry is Silas’s adoptive mother and the gypsy that cursed the Hackket children. She cares for Silas and hates the Hacketts for setting him free, which caused the fire that burned down everything.
At the game’s climax, we see Silas injured, returning to his haven, the cage he spent his life in. He’d been hiding here from the Hackkets for years, and the real kicker was that the creature was a child. All the high and mighty declarations of love of the gypsy fall flat when you think about the boy living in a cage for years. She showed off Silas as a circus freak, making money off of him, which doesn’t sound very motherly of her.
How Silas Got The Curse To Become A Werewolf?
In The Quarry, we never receive an explicit explanation about the origins of how Silas becomes a werewolf. The Hackett family elders reveal that Silas is the original bearer of the curse (Ha! Dark Souls 2 reference). Killing Silas will lift the curse and set them free.
What Could Be The Reason For Silas’s Werewolf Transformations?
Let’s discuss what the probable causes of Silas becoming a werewolf are.
1. Silas Was Dying; He Needed A Way To Live
The white wolf’s pale skin is a clue to go off of, we believe that the boy, Silas wasn’t in good health. Albinism can link to susceptible skin, visual problems, and a weak constitution. Being unable to go out in the sunlight isn’t good for the body, which gives rise to vitamin deficiencies.
It’s not a stretch to think that Silas was at death’s door before or during his time with the gypsy woman, Eliza. She may have intentionally put a curse on Silas to save him, with him fully aware of what the consequences are.
The theory makes sense if you believe her words when she pleads to spare Silas at the end of the game. Silas becomes wounded and vulnerable in his werewolf form, which she can’t bear to see.
2. Silas Needed Sanctuary
Theory number 2 is that Silas became a werewolf after meeting Eliza and came to her for help. Silas knew he was different physically, and perhaps he even faced mockery because of his appearance. The gypsy sympathized with the boy and offered him a means to get back at those that made fun of him.
The gypsy knew Silas would be dangerous to everyone. His feral werewolf form needed to be brought to heel. She prepared a cage for him to keep him. She cared for the boy but kept him locked up for everyone else’s sake. When the events of the game happened, she was rightfully furious. She appointed Silas as the instrument of her vengeance.
This theory checks out, considering that Silas returned to the cell many times after being freed. Perhaps the boy wanted a place to belong, and the cage was where he felt at home.
3. The Gypsy Manipulated Silas
Given the youthful appearance of Silas, which briefly appears at the end of the game, it’s possible to think that the gypsy woman tricked Silas. Let’s look at the facts that we know from the game.
Silas is a young boy, entirely in danger of falling under anyone’s influence. The gypsy is manipulative, evidenced by the fact that she goads the players to select choices that kill off characters. When Silas approached Eliza, the gypsy took an interest in the boy and turned her into her protective pet.
Poor Silas devoted himself fully to serving her, even going so far as to return to his cell numerous times to rest. Even after the gypsy’s death, the kid remains bound to carry out her bidding. If this is true, then shooting Silas is a mercy killing.
4. The Gypsy & Silas Truly Cared For Each Other
The last theory we got for you is the opposite of everything else. Sometimes the obvious answer is correct, and that’s the case with the gypsy and how Silas becomes a werewolf.
Silas and Eliza are both outcasts, mocked for their existence. Eliza received no respect from others and worked for a living while on the move, having no place of her own. Silas saw other kids who teased him for being different. The two souls met by fate and bonded quickly, having someone to confide in without judgment.
To pay her back for letting him accompany her, Silas agrees to be Eliza’s protector. The spell she used caused Silas to become a werewolf. The wild and unpredictable side effects force Eliza to keep Silas locked up. She continued to care for and watch over the boy.
She also had to make a living, so she used Silas as an attraction, like a circus freak. Of course, things went wrong horribly, and the game’s events happened. It becomes more heartbreaking if this theory is taken as context when Silas returns to the cage. The boy is still mourning his loss, and each time he returns, he sees nothing, aggravating his heartache.
This theory also makes sense when you consider that Silas, after becoming free, instead of being grateful, attacked the Hacketts. He didn’t want to be away from Eliza, but the Hackket kids forced him to flee, and the fire is a scary sight for anyone, let alone a child in a werewolf’s body.
