Sons of the Forest is a game full of surprises, wonders, horrific places, and some great and bright things.
While Sons of the Forest can be a challenging, complex, and terrifying game, it offers some wholesome and beneficial components to help you through your playthrough. One of these elements is an AI survivor named Kelvin.
Kelvin is loyal and willing to help in Sons of the Forest; yet, it is essential that players know everything about him in order to put him to the best use and, most importantly, help him survive.
Stay with us and learn everything you need about everyone’s favorite companion in Sons of the Forest: Kelvin!
Who is Kelvin?
Kelvin is part of the research and rescue team tasked with investigating the strange occurrences in the forest and rescuing an influential and wealthy character. Before Kelvin, the team, and you can peacefully arrive at the LZ, your helicopter malfunctions, causing it to crash and killing almost everyone except for Kelvin and you.
As you wake up in the Sons of the Forest, you notice that Kelvin is injured and has lost his sense of hearing, forcing you to communicate with him through commands written on a notepad.
From the beginning, Kelvin will follow you to the world’s edge and excel at whatever tasks you order him to do. He is a great addition to the Forest games, and we’re excited to see improvements like this in the sequel!
What Can Kelvin Do in the Sons of the Forest?
As mentioned, you can only communicate with him through notes due to his injuries sustained in the helicopter crash, as he is both deaf and mute. Thankfully, he can do many things to help you, from gathering resources and spotting enemies to completing instructions.

Kelvin’s Passive Actions

- Spot Enemies
Kelvin can spot enemies from a decent distance by pointing at them, even if they are hiding behind a tree. This early warning can really help, especially in the earlier game phases when you are doing riskier things like trying to build a shelter in Sons of the Forest.
Kelvin is Human
It is essential to note that Kelvin will automatically take breaks and get his food when he is tired, even if you do not command him to take a break. However, we cannot be too hard on him; let him have a snack.
While Kelvin takes breaks, drinks, and eats all by himself, if you don’t occasionally remind him to take a break, he can become less productive and upset with you. He’s such a nice guy doing all of the grunt work around the Forest and camp. We can’t be too mad at him.
Things Kelvin is Not Good at Doing in the Sons of the Forest
While Kelvin is a valuable companion, here are some actions that we do not recommend doing with him.
Don’t Take Him To Fights
Kelvin’s fighting skills are limited, and he often just crouches in fear during attacks, making him highly vulnerable.
Keep him safe, and don’t take him into caves or cannibal encampments, as he would be vulnerable to attacks. We hope that future improvements to the Sons of the Forest will make Kelvin more reactive or potentially allow him to learn or earn more skills, such as improved combat skills.
However, for the time being, you need to be very careful with where you take Kevlin in the game.
Never Order Kelvin to Finish a Treehouse or Get Logs Near a Treehouse in the Current State of Sons of the Forest
Treehouses can require a fair amount of resources, especially logs. While Kelvin can obtain these resources without trouble and even complete the treehouse, this is not recommended.
As soon as you start building a treehouse and order Kelvin to finish it, the very first thing he will try to do is to get logs for the treehouse FROM THE TREEHOUSE! Yes, Kelvin will try to chop down the tree on which you are building your shelter.
While Kelvin’s destroying of treehouses is annoying, it can also create hilarious moments in Sons of the Forest.
Don’t Order Kelvin to Stay at an Unsafe Location
If you are far from your shelter and Kelvin is following you, don’t order him to stay where you are, as you could potentially forget and leave him to his own fate.
What Happens if Kelvin Dies in Sons of the Forest?
While cannibals are likely to ignore Kelvin from a distance, they can attack him if you get close. Fortunately, Kelvin can take a lot of hits before going down, but it is better not to risk it. If you leave him alone to the cannibals for too long, he will perish.
Many players who prefer a more challenging experience tend to get rid of him at the beginning of their playthrough by hitting him several times. For this reason, Sons of the Forest players who don’t want to lose Kelvin should be a bit more careful where they place traps or swing their weapons.
Can You Revive Kelvin in the Sons of the Forest?
There is no official way to revive Kelvin if he dies, but many players have found workarounds to bring him back.
One of the first and obvious things you can do is to go to an older save, but if you don’t want to do this, here we present you with a helpful workaround.
