Hogwarts Legacy taunts us from the very beginning of the game with “Level 1 Lock” on doors and chests all around Hogwarts and Hogsmeade. These locks can be opened with Alohomora… but it takes a while to gain access to that spell. So in this guide, we’ll explain where you learn Alohomora in Hogwarts Legacy, and show how it works!
Spoilers status: Alohomora is unlocked after a mid-game main story quest. There’ll be one first section listing the names of the main story quests leading up to learning Alohomora, then a second section detailing the events. The final section will be about the spell itself in Hogwarts Legacy.

How To Get Alohomora In Hogwarts Legacy – Full Version
After the second visit to the Map Chamber, you’ll receive mail from several people, including Gladwin Moon, the castle’s caretaker. Accompanying that missive is a new quest, The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament.
That quest has you meet with Gladwin Moon during the day at the entrance of the Grand Staircase. There, he’ll explain that someone has placed dozens of Demiguises – what he fears most – all across Hogwarts and the world around it, and that he wants you to rid the place of them by taking the moon that they hold during the night.
For the first step in that endeavor, he’ll have you take care of the two Demiguises that have been placed in the Faculty tower. However, since that area is locked in Hogwarts Legacy, Gladwin will first teach you Alohomora to make it in.
And that’s it, you now have the spell! … Except that you must still finish the quest before fully accessing it. Abandoning it will also reset your knowledge of the unlocking charm.
Additional Notes
Warning: Do NOT abandon the quest while it is in progress. Doing so will lock you out of getting any further in the game without using some obscure bug fixes.
Second warning: Save before starting the quest, in case. And also save over a second slot to be extra sure. The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament is known to not always behave, and it’s better to be safe than sorry, and to just have the option to start things over from just before instead of having to search for bug fixes.
If you want to know more about the bugs with Gladwin Moon’s quest in Hogwarts Legacy, or if you ran into them and want to know how to get yourself out of that situation, we also wrote a guide on that.
Completing The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament
Gladwin Moon’s quest begins with learning Alohomora and entering the Faculty tower in Hogwarts Legacy. But the trouble comes from the fact that this area is off-limits and has prefects and professors roaming about, so this will be a stealth mission.
It has been a while since the tutorials of the Forbidden Section’s sneaking, so here’s a reminder of the strategies and tricks to use for stealth.
- Obviously, this quest is done using the Disillusionment charm.
- “Enemies” will detect you if you’re within a certain distance of them while they look in your direction. They will take about two seconds to go from sensing a presence to fully seeing you. So, there can still be some time left to save it and go back under cover if they start noticing you.
- Casting Revelio shows the presence and position of all professors and prefects nearby. It also lets you know what direction they’re facing.
- Using basic casts will pull the enemies’ attention to what you’ve attacked. You’ll also sometimes find interactable objects that make noise for that same purpose.
- Don’t rush into things. Be patient to see the prefects’ and professors’ patterns if you don’t want to risk them turning back exactly when you decided to move forward.
The two Demiguises to collect are in the prefects’ bathroom, and in the hospital wing. To get there, simply climb up from the entrance of the tower, until reaching the place in the screenshot above. The staircase leads to the hospital wing, while the door on the right is the way to the bathroom.
Don’t be worried about failing, the checkpoints are forgiving in this mission. Just make sure to choose “Try Again” and not to abandon the quest upon getting a game over. The former is safe, while the latter triggers the quest’s bug.
That said, if you’re struggling with completing this mission, you can make things easier with talents in Hogwarts Legacy. Two talents in the Stealth tree reduce the enemies’ detection radius, while a third one allows you to sprint while stealthed (making you require a lower window to sneak past an enemy or allowing you to go back to cover before being fully detected).
Once you’ve retrieved the two moons, you’ve got to make your way back to Gladwin Moon, and the quest is done!
Note: There are collectibles and other locked doors in the Faculty tower. You can make detours and collect them during the stealth mission, but there’s no need for that – you can simply come back there later, during the day, to get everything in peace without needing to stealth.
You will also need to come back later to get everything anyway, as there are locks in this tower that you can’t open when doing this quest.
Alohomora In Hogwarts Legacy
Alohomora is the spell that unlocks all of these locked doors in Hogwarts Legacy and chests with a “Level I Lock”, “Level II Lock”, or “Level III Lock” indication on them.
Using Alohomora on a lock will make you manually pick it (well, as manually as magic can be called).
Picking works by manipulating two “cogs” until they’re both at the correct position. When one of them is in the correct position, the corresponding set of gears is set in motion.
The outer cog handles the two circular pieces on the bottom right, while the inner one operates the pieces in the middle.
The strategy to quickly deal with locks is straight-forward: hold the key to rotate one of the cogs in one direction until you see the corresponding gears move. As soon as they do, release the key and slowly rotate the mechanism in the other direction until you’ve made the gears move again. Then, do the same with the second circle.
Once you’ve done that, the mechanism activates, and the lock is picked!
Lock Levels And The Man Behind The Moons
Now, the downside is that as of learning Alohomora, you can only open locks of level 1. Thicker locks read “Level II Lock” or “Level III Lock”, and can’t be picked with the “base” version of Alohomora.
Upon finishing The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament, Gladwin Moon gives a new quest, The Man Behind The Moons, asking to look for the Demiguises all around the place, to collect their moons, and to return them to him. For doing so, he rewards the player with “a more advanced form of Alohomora”, which will be able to open locks of levels 2 and 3.
Though with how late Alohomora is unlocked in Hogwarts Legacy for how much exploration has happened before, this new spell will already allow you to discover a lot more new stuff when backtracking through previously discovered areas, even on its base level.
Warning: Same as above, The Man Behind The Moon is also known to cause players issues with bugs regarding progress tracking. Again, heed the warnings in that guide, and follow those precautions to avoid hard-locking yourself out of higher Alohomora levels until a patch eventually comes in.
Wrapping Up The Hogwarts Legacy Alohomora Guide
That’s it for how to get Alohomora and finally open all these doors that have been taunting you since the start of the game! Hopefully, you could deal with that without encountering any bugs along the way.
