Here you are again, regretting the name you picked yourself when creating a new account. Not to worry though, changing your name in Valorant is a pretty simple process. It is the same for most of the games by Riot (except for League of Legends) and this guide will cover everything you need to know about it.
What is Your Valorant Name?
First things first, we have to understand what we want to change. Your Valorant name is NOT your username that you use to log in to the Valorant or League’s client.
The username is created when registering the account and no one else can see it but you. Your username can’t be changed unless you try and submit the support ticket.
To change the Valorant name you will have to change your Riot ID. Unlike League of Legends, Valorant doesn’t have a Summoner’s Name which is a big plus. Soon you will find out why.
The Valorant name is displayed in the main menu of the game along with your tag. Other players that you play with can see both of those and can use them to add you to the friend list. The friend list is synchronized between different Riot games as it is linked to your Riot ID.
Changing the Riot ID
Riot ID can be changed in Riot Account settings. In the tab “Riot ID” your Riot ID, email, and other account details.
The biggest advantage of Riot ID is that you don’t need a unique name. It can literally be anything you want (as long as it is appropriate of course or you may get banned). So don’t expect any “Username is taken” messages, feel free to pick any name in the world as long as it is 3 characters long.
Another cool thing you can do is adding special characters to your Riot ID to make it look even more unique or weird. If you are not sure what characters you can use, there is a handy website with all the symbols and a validation checker for your name.
But that freedom comes at a cost. You can only change your Riot ID once every 30 days. So even if you made a mistake you will have to live with it for a month. There you go, you changed your Valorant name!
Custom Riot Tagline
The freedom of Riot ID is great and you may think that’s because every user has a unique tagline instead, like when using Discord. But wait for it, you can change the tagline too!
The tagline is the #numbers that follow your name. You can make the tagline up to 5 digits and it will be displayed as your tagline online. Nice and easy!
Ideas for a Valorant Name
Coming up with a new name could be a difficult task. And I know that from experience. If you already have a name that you widely use, go for it. But if you don’t, or it has already been taken by one of the active valorant players, let’s take a moment to think.
To start, we need a base for the name. The easiest one is to use the nickname you have or once had or a name/word that you found somewhere and really like. Now we need to play with it to make it unique. It’s good that Riot ID offers you complete freedom when entering your name, but you may think ahead in case you will jump to League for example.
Now let’s see some famous examples of online names:
- TimTheTatman
- Markiplier
- LilyPichu
All of them have their actual names in there: Tim, Mark, Lily. The way you twist it could depend on what you do or like. For example, your name is Mark as well and you like raccoons. Boom – Markoon. Your mascot could be a raccoon as well. Does it sound stupid? Maybe. But that was the first thing on my mind. Everything you come up with will sound stupid at first. Give it some time.
I use my name (Ed/Edward) everywhere. In GTA I recently changed the name to NotShadyEdward because GTA is all about illegal businesses and stuff. And I try to come up with something like this for every game. Or sometimes I go as Felwinter which is just the name I like.
The name should not make much sense as long as you enjoy wearing it. If you still can’t come up with anything, write something temporary. As soon as you start playing, chatting with your teammates or friends you will make memories to associate your name with in the future.
So don’t worry about it too much. At least that’s what I tell myself every time entering a new name.
