Ackley Barnes is a minor NPC in Hogsmeade, giving a secondary quest around the Hogwarts Legacy mid-game. In his quest, he asks the player to rob his ex-partner, Alfred Lawley, to damage his business.
Considering that you don’t know either character by this stage of the game, and considering that you do get a choice for this quest, then comes the question – should you accept Ackley Barnes’ request of robbing his former partner? And what are the consequences of either option?
Spoiler status: This guide contains no spoilers for Hogwarts Legacy besides talks of this quest itself. You can go ahead safely!
Should You Accept Ackley Barnes’ Request To Rob Alfred Lawley in Hogwarts Legacy?
Short answer: Yes!
Or you can also not. It… doesn’t really matter.
While this quest seemed menacing, presenting a moral dilemma, it’s just the setup for a simple quest like every other, and all options you pick lead to the same outcome.
Upon talking to Ackley Barnes, the player will get two choices of response to his request to rob Alfred Lawley – “I’ll do it” or “I’m not comfortable with this.”
Picking “I’ll do this” begins the quest. Picking “I’m not comfortable with this” will make Barnes try to insist, to which the player can answer either “Very well. I’ll do it” or “I’ll find another way”.
In all cases, there are two ways to complete this quest.
How to Complete the Venomous Revenge Side Quest in Hogwarts Legacy
The Venomous Revenge quest in Hogwarts Legacy opens access to Alfred Lawley’s cellar. In it, the player can break in to steal his venomous tentacula as well as some other items. Note that this is a stealth mission, as Lawley is roaming around his property, and the player will have to sneak past him in order to steal the tentacula (on the way back as well).
The second option is to get any other venomous tentacula, through any of the means that the game offers (growing it, harvesting one from any of the places they can be found, or buying one). That tentacula can be given to Ackley Barnes and it will fulfill his request as though it were Lawley’s.
So, what answer you pick makes no difference. But does it make a difference what way you complete the quest? Actually, it does!
Hogwarts Legacy has a surprising amount of details in the form of small changes based on your quest choices (See also: What happens whether you choose to give Zenobia Noke her gobstones back), and this quest is no exception.
Opting to steal from Alfred Lawley will prompt Sirona Ryan to say “Alfred Lawley’s none too pleased. Seems he’s been burgled. I shall pretend I never heard the rumors of your involvement.” when you later meet her at The Three Broomsticks.
That’ll be the extent of the consequences, though.

Should You Ask Ackley Barnes To Be Paid When Giving Him The Tentacula?
Yes!
Definitely yes, this time.
Completing the quest prompts the player with two options: “Happy to be rid of it” and “I’d like to be paid”.
The choice is very simple.
- Picking “Happy to be rid of it” will make Ackley Barnes reward the player with 300 Galleons in Hogwarts Legacy.
- Alternatively, picking “I’d like to be paid” will make Ackley Barnes reward the player with 500 Galleons.
That’s all the difference this choice makes. Not even a moral choice this time around. So, get your wages and get them up!
(You will notice from the above screenshot of the completed quest’s description, though, that completed quests actually keep track of the choices you’ve picked and of whether you’ve asked to be paid more for any given quest.)
