With the kiddies in bed and the TV to yourself, we’ve got some epic PS5 games for all our fellow adults out there. Yep, as much as we love spending quality time and bonding over gaming with the wee ones, sometimes, we need something to sink our teeth into. Today’s list is all about that, and what’s sweeter is that it’s not a long one either. Top 5 is all you’re gonna need for that mature gaming fix.
So, without wasting any more time, let’s jump in straight away and see which 5 games we have for you. Oh, and it goes without saying, but we’re only focusing on games that are out on the PS5. This doesn’t mean that they can’t be on the PS4 either, or PC; the point is we’re not solely focusing on exclusives. Also, only relatively newer entries of 2023 are gonna fill up the ranks on today’s list. Alright, let’s go!
5. Forspoken
We’re kicking off the party with a personal favorite of ours that not everybody liked as much. The hype was great, though admittedly, there are problems with the overall narrative and gameplay. Still, Forspoken more than impressed with its dazzling visuals, fun traversal, the magical combat spectacle, and the sassy language of the lead character. Yeah, she’s got a sailor’s mouth on her, dropping f and s bombs left and right.
The story follows the heroine, Frey, getting blasted from New York to an alternative fantasy world because of plot convenience; that’s every Issekai anime ever in a nutshell. However, what Forspoken does extremely well is put the emphasis on the fish out of water scenario. She’s out of her element and shows this all too well; subtlety ain’t her strong suit. Oh, and Frey has a magical talking bracelet. Her cussing and bafflement are kind of understandable.
The real shine of Forspoken is the gameplay, where you go about traversing luscious fields and various terrains. The movement and speed at which Frey moves, thanks to her magical abilities, is always a treat. Combat in Forspoken is pretty fun as well, with enough variety to spice up the fights. There’s a good degree of strategy involved, too, to survive powerful encounters. If you love narrative-driven adventure games, you’ll feel right at home in Forspoken.
4. Dead Space Remake
Alrighty, if that last game wasn’t your cup of tea, and you’re looking for adult PS5 games to scare the pants off of ya, step right up! We’ve got Dead Space Remake, an exceptionally brilliant survival horror game. The cosmic horror and ambiance are filled to the brim in Dead Space Remake. A vast number of highly disturbing events and abominations stalk around every corner. You never know when a Necromorph might appear to take out protagonist Isaac Clarke.
If you don’t know, Necromorphs are terrifying and grotesque corpses reanimated and twisted beyond recognition. Isaac Clarke is an engineer who’s stuck aboard a space station with a full infestation of these horrific monstrosities. Dead Space Remake cranks up the horror with its dark atmosphere of space with claustrophobic hallways in between the massive spaceship. The soundtrack does a tremendous job of instilling dread within players.
Dead Space Remake doesn’t let the players go into the deep end without the proper means of defending themselves. The plasma cutter and a host of other weapons and useful skills allow Isaac Clarke to ward off and even eliminate the Necromorphs. Pro tip: aim for the limbs instead of the head; you’ll thank us later. Dead Space Remake is perfect for adults who want a tense and enthralling gaming experience like our favorite PS4 horror adventure games.
3. Final Fantasy 16
Alright, y’all know we love our Japanese roleplaying games. In fact, we’ve gone and made up a whole list of our top PS4 JRPGS. As any veteran or heck, even casual fans of JRPGS know, the Final Fantasy games are synonymous with the genre. So when Square Enix announced the M-rated Final Fantasy 16, the first pure PS5 entry for adults, our intrigue was through the roof as it joined the exclusive age-group club of games.
Gallant hero Clive Rosfield embarks on a journey to protect his family and kingdom from ruin. The tale has a grittiness and dark undertones weavings to enrich the story. Even Final Fantasy 16’s visuals are a stark contrast from the usually colorful and bright aesthetics of other mainline Final Fantasy games. The action is not turn-based but rather really in real-time. The active enemy engagement makes players pay attention to the battlefield.
There is the usual fare of quirky characters that form certain archetypes in RPGS in Final Fantasy 16. You can’t control them, though, but there is a doggo you can command to perform certain actions during fights. The combat is highly satisfying and plays out more like a hack-and-slasher; you gotta build up the stagger meter and strike at every opportunity. Final Fantasy 16’s story and gameplay are a unique combo perfect for a mature audience, so check it out!
2. Cyberpunk 2077
We’re in the top-tier category of PS5 games for adults, and it’s fitting that we go with Cyberpunk 2077. Yeah, yeah, it’s an old game now, but with the Phantom Liberty DLC and a host of other updates, Cyberpunk 2077 is practically a whole new game. There are massive overhauls to the gameplay and presentation, including new weapons, vehicles, story missions, and even tweaks to character progression.
The core story remains the same. V, the protagonist, coming from the background of the player’s choosing eventually is part of the central conflict between factions. Cyberpunk 2077 has brutal and quick executions in combat, and the first-person perspective takes you up close and personal with the action. The depiction of violence aside, there’s also plenty of adult content with intimate scenes in Cyberpunk 2077, making it one of our favorite RPGS with romance.
The way the story unfolds and alters in Cyberpunk 2077, depending on the player’s actions and the order in which they complete missions, is a masterclass of game design. Seriously, now’s the perfect time to jump back into Cyberpunk 2077 and start a new playthrough. The game’s phenomenal from start to finish, especially when you reach the epilogue. You see the consequences of your choices, and it’s a motivation to replay the game again with different decisions.
1. Mortal Kombat 1
To cap off our list of amazing PS5 games for adults, we’re going with the most graphic and bloody game there is. Presently, the game in question is Mortal Kombat 1. No, not the arcade one, but the 2023 one released this month. While advertising and promotions for Mortal Kombat 1 were giving the impression of a reboot, the game’s actually a continuation after the events of Mortal Kombat 11.
We’re not complaining, though, as the storyline is all kinds of fan service that we gush over. Some much-needed spotlight on characters who were often nothing more than jobbers and punching bags is a welcome change. Plus, let’s be honest here: Mortal Kombat 1 also has gruesome finishers, the fatalities, that all fans love performing on the opponent character. They’re the most painful and creatively brutal since the franchise’s inception in the early 90’s.
Mortal Kombat 1 also has excellent tutorial integration to help new players and even series veterans learn the characters’ movesets. The combos are highly long and take time to master and perform in sync when playing against difficult opponents. If you’re a fighting game junkie like us, then you’ll have no trouble playing Mortal Kombat 1. For similar gaming suggestions, we point you toward our favorite PS1 fighting games.
