With the recent release of Destiny 2’s latest expansion, The Witch Queen, there are plenty of new and returning players. So, why not have a refresher on how to upgrade your weapons and gear? To increase your power level, you will need to obtain upgrade modules. Obtaining upgrade modules in Destiny 2 is easy enough, and this quick guide will give you a few ways how to grab these precious items.
Okay, no more rambling. Let’s jump right into how to get Destiny 2 upgrade modules.
Buy Upgrade Modules From Ada-1 or Banshee-44
Let’s start with the easiest method, assuming you have the resources to do so. Players can buy upgrade modules from Ada-1 or Banshee-44. Ada-1 is the armorer and can be found in the Black Armory of the Tower. Banshee-44 is the weaponsmith and is also located in the Tower. Buying upgrade modules will require some extra resources, though.
So if you are just beginning the game, this option might not be for you, at least not yet. Also, if you are a new player, you will need to complete the New Light campaign before the Tower becomes usable.
Anyways, the following materials are needed to purchase an upgrade module from either Ada-1 or Banshee-44:
- Enhancement Core – 1
- Legendary Shards – 10
- Planetary Materials – 25
- Glimmer – 5,000
It is important to note that while all the prices will stay the same, the type of planetary material will change daily. The planetary materials can be found or bought from elsewhere as well.
Increase Valor Rank
Another way to earn upgrade modules is by increasing your valor rank. You can do this by playing in the Crucible. The Crucible is Destiny 2’s version of PVP (Player vs. Player). So if you are the competitive type or just want to have fun, then this mode might be for you. You will gain Valor by playing in any of the playlists. Winning will net you more, and going on a hot streak will also give you a streak bonus. Up to a 5-win streak.
After reaching rank 4, you will acquire upgrade modules, three of them to be exact. You can then reset your progress and hit rank 4 again to receive those modules again. This method can be done as much as you want, but it is also a grind.
Increase Infamy Rank
You can also earn upgrade modules by increasing your infamy rank. To increase your infamy rank, you must participate in the Gambit. The Gambit is a blend of PVP and PVE where two teams must complete objectives.
Much like the Crucible, after reaching infamy rank 4 you will obtain three upgrade modules. Wins offer more points than losses. Bounties can also be completed to help increase your rank faster. You are also able to reset your infamy rank over and over again to keep getting these rewards.
Obtain Upgrade Modules From the Season Pass
This is probably the most straightforward method on how to get upgrade modules in Destiny 2. Whether you are on the free track or paid track, you can earn upgrade modules in the season pass. However, there is a limited amount to be earned. Once you earn all of the upgrade modules in the season pass, there won’t be any more for you to earn that season.
The current season, Season of the Risen, runs until May 24, 2022. This gives you plenty of time to earn all of the upgrade modules. This also depends on how much you play the game. The more you play, the faster you will earn these items. Below I will detail exactly when you will get these items this season.
Season Tracks
Free Track
- 3 upgrade modules at rank 2, 4, and 8.
- 2 upgrade modules at Rank 11, 14, 18, 21, and 26.
That’s a total of 19 upgrade modules to earn in the free tiers without paying $10 for the paid track. This is a great value considering it is free and they offer them at the lower levels of the season pass. So if you are only in it for the upgrade modules, then once you hit level 26 in the season pass, you have gained all the possible upgrade modules.
Paid Track
- 3 upgrade modules at Rank 34, 47, 62, and 84.
An extra 12 modules are obtainable if you decide to drop $10 on the season pass to unlock the paid track. You also gain a bunch of other valuable items as well. The downside is that these appear later in the season pass. As I stated earlier, depending on how much you play, you might or might not earn these, which is a loss of resources and real money. However, if you complete the season pass, you are getting your money’s worth.

Modularity Mod
Another method to gain upgrade modules is to use a modularity mod. While the drop rate seems to be relatively low to obtain one with one of these equipped, it is still a different way to get them. A modularity mod will have one of three possible activities that will need to be completed to have an extra chance of these dropping.
These are the following modularity mods:
- Crucible: Crucible wins have a chance to award an Upgrade Module.
- Vanguard: Vanguard playlist strikes and Nightfall completions have a chance to award an Upgrade Module.
- Gambit: Gambit wins have a chance to award an Upgrade Module.
These mods can be a little bit difficult to come by. Also, only after the Ghost Shell has been Masterworked can this mod slot may be unlocked.
Use A Concentrated Mattergem
Concentrated Mattergems can be purchased using the currency Bright Dust. The season pass gives plenty of Bright Dust to use. If you have the paid track as well, you can receive thousands of these. It costs 200 bright dust, which is pretty cheap, considering how helpful Concentrated Mattergems are.
A Concentrated Mattergem gives the player a “buff.” While this buff is active, bosses can drop an Upgrade Module when defeated. This effect lasts until an Upgrade Module is found. Only one Concentrated Mattergem can be active at a time. This is a great way to farm upgrade modules in Destiny 2 if you have a lot of these. However, remember to activate another gem once you get one upgrade module.
