In Valheim, Abyssal Barnacles are a rare resource that can be difficult to find, requiring Vikings to set out into the deep sea. Abyssal Barnacles aren’t necessary for progression, but the Chitin they drop is a handy resource to have in order to craft a few fantastic mid-game items.
Where do you farm Abyssal Barnacles in Valheim?
Abyssal Barnacles are only found in Valheim atop the gigantic, friendly Leviathans. These Leviathans are massive creatures made of rock or with small islands on their backs.
Leviathans
These living islands are located in the deep ocean biome and the creatures themselves are passive. The tricky part of finding them is that you need to be in the Ocean biome.
If you are sailing deep in the ocean, but the name displayed above your mini-map says another zone, such as the Black Forest or Meadows, a Leviathan will not spawn there.
Additionally, Leviathans have a 1% chance of appearing every 30 meters on full ocean biomes, so it is better to find them when sailing to the far west or east. Ultimately, this depends on your world seed.
Lastly, Leviathans are spawned upon world generation and do not respawn once they retreat below the waves of the Ocean. If you spot a Leviathan while playing Valheim but aren’t prepared to mine the Abyssal Barnacles off its back, mark them on your map so you don’t lose your limited chance to farm them.
What do you need to farm Abyssal Barnacles from Leviathans in Valheim?
Once you spot a Leviathan, slowly approach them with your boat and part right next to them. Afterward, locate the biggest cluster of Abyssal Barnacles and start mining with any Pickaxe. This resource doesn’t require a specific tier of Pickaxe. However, higher-grade Pickaxes are recommended as they will allow more material to be mined.
It’s essential to mine very quickly when farming Abyssal Barnacles because every hit against the Leviathan’s back has a chance to trigger the Leviathan’s submerge, signaled by a loud howling sound. After the howl is triggered, you have a limited amount of time before the Leviathan begins to sink.
If you’re lucky, you will get another minute before the beast begins to sink. However, every time an Abyssal Barnacle is fully mined, there is a 25% chance that the Leviathan will submerge immediately.
What Items can you make Chitin in Valheim?
Every Abyssal Barnacle in Valheim yields about 3-5 Chitin. Moreover, Chitin can only be acquired from Leviathans. But what can you make with this limited resource? Mining Chitin from Abyssal Barnacles will allow you to craft the Abyssal Razor and the Abyssal Harpoon. These are some of the most powerful weapons in Valheim.
The Abyssal Razor
The Abyssal Razor is one of the strongest Knives in Valheim, and its damage is equivalent to an Iron-tier weapon. Crafting an Abyssal Razor can significantly boost your damage, especially if you barely started mining for copper. This is a great reason to get yourself some Abyssal Barnacles in Valheim. If you are able.
The Abyssal Harpoon
However, the Abyssal Harpoon is our favorite of the two weapons you can craft from Chitin. This weapon cannot be upgraded and has low damage, but it tethers a monster to you, allowing you to drag them with you at the cost of stamina. The Abyssal Harpoon is essential for herding animals into enclosures, pulling monsters into traps, and, most importantly, farming gigantic Serpents.
It’s extremely difficult to farm Serpents, let alone see one at night or during a storm. Serpents drop Scales and high-tier Serpent meat, which provides fantastic buffs, but if you slay them in the deep sea where they spawn, their drops will quickly sink beneath the waves.
Having an Abyssal Harpoon allows you to drag them to shore and slay them on land to secure their loot drops.
