If you’re playing Project Zomboid, then you know that zombies can get into your house pretty easily. In this guide, we’re going to show you how to board up windows in Project Zomboid so they can’t get in. This is a very important step in keeping yourself safe from zombies!

Why You Want to Board Up Windows in Project Zomboid

Project Zomboid has developed into one of the most realistic zombie survival simulations ever produced. Despite its simple graphics, it’s incredibly detailed.

One of the most important things you need to do is to establish yourself a home base where you can find safety and peace. This is essential to find good sleep in Project Zomboid and lose Tired status effects. It’s also necessary to have a secure location in order to heal and rearm before more adventures.

But making a home base isn’t as easy as just finding an abandoned house. You need to board up all of the windows in Project Zomboid safehouse. Otherwise, zombies will be able to get in and attack you.

Step By Step Guide on How to Board Up Windows in Project Zomboid

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to board up windows so that zombies can’t get into your house:

    1. Find the Right Building Materials

To board up windows in Project Zomboid, you will need three things: wooden planks, nails, and a hammer.

You can find wooden planks by taking wooden furniture apart with a saw and hammer. Alternatively, you can cut up logs into planks using the saw and the game’s context menu with the “disassemble” action. Unfortunately, you will need an ax to chop down the trees before you saw them into wooden planks. Not sure why you can’t use a saw to cut the trees down, but those are the rules.

You can commonly find saws, hammers, and nails in garages, warehouses, tool sheds, or other random containers. Therefore, start your journey by collecting your tools and nails from garages and then head into a home or two. From there, focus on disassembling furniture to make yourself some wooden planks.

Note: Your character does not need any carpentry skills to barricade windows in Project Zomboid.

    2. Barricade Your Window(s)

Next, go to the window you want to board up and interact with it. (You interact with objects by rick-clicking on them.) From the menu that opens, select “Barricade (Planks).”

You can Customize Your Window Barricade with the Number of Planks Used

You can use more or fewer planks when you board up your windows to make the wooden barricade stronger or easier to see through. You can use four wooden planks to cover an entire window and obscure anyone or anything behind it.

If you don’t want to use four wooden planks on every window to prevent zombies from seeing inside, you can also use drawn curtains to limit their visibility.

Additional Questions and Answers around Boarding Up Windows in Project Zomboid

We have a bit more guidance for those still with unanswered questions about how to board up a window in Project Zomboid.

    What is a Barricade?

A barricade in Project Zomboid is any construction that may be used to strengthen doors or windows. Barriers are not limited to simple wood construction, as described in this guide on how to board up windows in Project Zomboid. For instance, you can also make welded barricades out of metal sheets or bars.

    Metal Barricades

Metal sheet barricades provide some of the best protection but also prevent you from seeing out of them. While, in some cases, that is desired (zombies can’t see through a metal barricade either), you may want to see out. In that case, metal bars are your best choice.

    Conclusion

Now that you know how to board up windows in Project Zomboid, it’s time to get out there and do it! Barricading your windows is an essential step in protecting yourself from zombies. It’s also necessary if you want to establish a safe home base where you can sleep, heal, and rearm. Good luck!

We’d love to hear about if you’ve built yourself an awesome safe house by boarding up windows. Feel free to leave us a comment below.
