Another day, another retro gaming list like the best SNES games of all time. Not that we’re complaining, classic games are our jam, and if it’s the same for you, you’re in for a treat today. We’ve got a lot of games to talk about today, so it’s probably best to jump into the thick of things right away. Oh, and before we forget, we’ll also tell you our criteria for the selection process for transparency.

How We’ll Decide the Top 10 SNES Games?

Alright, to make things short and sweet, here’s what we’ll look for in the SNES games. If they can’t reach the benchmark we’re putting out, we won’t put them on the list.

    • The SNES games must have impressive visuals and sound design that sets them apart from other generic titles. Yes, the SNES platform is part of the 16-bit era, so only the most eye-catching titles that push the system to its limits will make the cut.
    • Another thing the SNES games should have is awesome gameplay mechanics. Only the most innovative or ridiculously fun titles will find a spot on our list today. Nintendo has always remained a household name in gaming. Their recent venture into VR games on Switch exemplifies their constant drive for innovative experiences, which is fantastic for players.

Aside from the above two requirements, we’re also looking to shake things up. To mix up the lineup on our list, we’re also putting out the rule of only one game per franchise.

Which SNES Games are the Best?

Okay, we have put out everything important for today’s list of top SNES games. We’re excited to talk about and gush over these titles, as they’re responsible for making our childhood memorable.

Now let’s see how they changed the gaming landscape within the days of SNES games. We’ve got 10 slots to fill up, so there is plenty of room for many fan favorites. Anyway, here’s our list of the top 10 games on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Let’s go!

    10. Harvest Moon – The Laidback Farming Adventure is Equally as Compelling as Any SNES Action Game

Harvest Moon is one of the most fun SNES games ever.

Kicking things off, we have the welcoming vibes and relaxing pace of one of the most immersive SNES games ever, Harvest Moon. Yep, the very first one. It’s a game that shockingly made a mundane premise sound intriguing and highly engaging gameplay-wise. The game is all about the simulation of a farming experience. Every aspect is fascinating, from tending to the land for crop cultivation to taking care of livestock.

Also there’s a social element to Harvest Moon as well. Players will form bonds and, eventually, a relationship with one of the lucky NPCs. It’s part of the charm of Harvest Moon. If your curiosity is piqued, you might wanna check out our ranking of all Harvest Moon games to play the best and steer clear of the worst ones. For the Harvest Moon game on SNES, it’s a must-play, so go on and try it.

    9. Super Punch-Out!! – Quite An Addictive Game for A Basic Premise

Super Punch-Out! is an amazing SNES game.

Moving onto the next NES game on our list, we have Super Punch-Out!! Quite the flashy name, we’ll admit, but trust us, you’ll love playing through this gem. Super Punch-Out!! is exactly what it sounds like, a game about punching. The A.I. difficulty ranges from easy to hard, but the players must focus on reading the attack pattern to dodge their blows successfully.

The goal is to knock out the opponent in under 3 minutes and deliver the final blow. Super Punch-Out!! is a fun-filled SNES game for quick sessions and is an excellent stress reliever. Its over-the-top, wildly animated, and colorful characters that players face in boxing matches are hilarious. If you like more wacky games where you punch your opponents, you’ll enjoy our top boxing games on PS5.

    8. Super Bomberman – The Revolutionary Multiplayer Co-op is the Highlight of this SNES Game

Super Bomberman is one of the most fun SNES games ever.

Next up on our list of awesome SNES games we have the ever-fabulous Super Bomberman. It’s a classic title that’s still enjoyable today. What’s more, Super Bomberman is the first game on the platform to present a fully functioning 4-player co-op integration.

The single-player gameplay involves carving out a path in a maze by placing bombs and avoiding the range of the explosion. Once the way is clear, it is up to the players to strategically place bombs around enemies to eliminate them. The levels have loads of power-ups and other explosives that can trigger chain reactions.

On its own, Super Bomberman is a spectacular SNES game, but to truly enhance the enjoyment, you should play Battle Mode. It’s the same, except now the last player standing is the winner. For more fun multiplayer titles, check out our 4 best Switch Co-op games.

    7. Final Fantasy IV – The Most Game-Changing Final Fantasy Title in the Series is JRPG Perfection

Final Fantasy IV is one of the most ground-breaking SNES games of all time.

The realm of JRPGS is a vast one, but none had quite the impact on game mechanics like Final Fantasy IV. Players see the debut of the active time battle system that many future entries in the series and other JRPGS, in general, would go on to adopt. Also, the SNES game’s story has a cinematic vibe to it. The characters have complex backstories that tie into the plot.

The companion characters’ classes cannot change, which gives them a more distinct identity and gameplay utility. Plus, players have control over a whooping 5 characters at a time instead of the traditional 4, which adds extra layers of strategic gameplay. Final Fantasy IV has an array of gorgeous vistas and environments to explore, with dungeons having random combat encounters.

In addition to all other superb features, the musical score of Final Fantasy IV has some of the best tracks from the SNES era of games. If you like games that give off the vibe of setting off on an adventure in a fairway fantasy land, you’ll surely have a blast with our handpicked selection of Medieval themed games on PS4.

    6. The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past – Nostalgia and Its Timeless Aura Make this Game Feel Compelling

The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past at the pinnacle of NES action-adventure games.

Capping off the first half of our list of top-tier SNES games, we have Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past. After the questionable game design choice of Zelda II, this was a return to form for Nintendo’s flagship franchise. Not only does Link’s freedom of movement return but there are also great strides in combat and exploration in Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past.

The journey of defeating Ganon by obtaining the Master Sword and Tri-Force is truly a timeless one. Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past will have players hopping back and forth between light and dark realms. The idea is to solve puzzles, complete missions to progress, and obtain weapons and shields.

Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past is the most fun and highly addictive adventure game on the SNES. If you like titles that offer a similar grand spectacle, consider checking out our top single-player adventure games.

    5. Mortal Kombat II – The Bloody, Brutal, and Gritty Fighting Game Still Holds Up Fantastically

    Mortal Kombat II.

Hold your breath, gather the air in your lungs, and then scream as loud as you can, MORTAL KOMBAT! Sorry, we couldn’t resist; it’s a habit with this next pick on our list of top SNES games, Mortal Kombat II. It’s the game that stirred up the rating system debate because of its depiction of blood and gruesome fatalities. The gameplay is like a fine wine, or in this case, preserved blood.

Anyway, Mortal Kombat II is a fighting game that has a colorful cast of characters. Each one has an incredible design and backstory, with their signature moves that are iconic nowadays. Players can test their retro arcade-style gaming skills in Mortal Kombat II for serious bragging rights. It’s astounding that Nintendo allowed this game on the NES.

Mortal Kombat II proves that though Nintendo is renowned for its family-friendly image, it also has games for adults. Anyway, Mortal Kombat II is definitely a classic SNES game that’s worth your time. Unless you’re squeamish, then stay away!

    4. The Adventures Of Batman & Robin – Amazing Graphics and Stylish Gameplay of the Dynamic Duo Mesmerize

    Adventures Of Batman & Robin.

Recapturing the iconic vibe and feel of the fantastic Batman cartoon, Adventures of Batman & Robin succeeds handily. The game is phenomenal and one of the finest from the SNES days. Players take on the role of the dark knight himself, and he A.I. controls his sidekick, Robin. The game is a 2-D side-scroller where Batman beats up thugs and their leaders from the animated show.

Adventures of Batman & Robin allows players to customize Batman’s loadout and use the various gadgets to progress. The story follows the plot of the standalone episodes of the cartoon. It’s always a pleasure to return to Adventures of Batman & Robin, as it’s another timeless SNES classic game.

You’ll feel like a kid again when playing Adventures of Batman & Robin. Ah, simpler times, eagerly waking up every Saturday to watch your favorite shows or play your favorite games for kids.

    3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time – The Most Satisfying Beat’em Up on SNES

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time.

Okay, we’re entering the top-tier SNES games category with our next pick. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time is a joy to sit through and play with. The side-scrolling movement and combo attacks are incredibly satisfying to pull off. The game’s musical score and colorful art style are a treat for the senses. The game’s story also packs the franchise’s trademark humor and vibe.

Another excellent feature of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time is that each of the turtles plays distinctly. Leonardo uses his swords to unleash precision strikes, and Donatello can use his staff to slam and toss his opponents out of the way. Similarly, Raphael slices, dices, and throws his sais at enemies, while Michelangelo brings the pain with his nunchucks for crowd control.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time will always have a special place in our hearts. It’s clearly one the most satisfying brawling beat’em up games on the SNES and worth playing.

    2. Sunset Riders – Cowboy Run-and-Gun, Side-Scroller Shooter is Our Runner-Up for Top SNES Games

    Sunset Riders.

For our runner-up pick on our list of top SNES games, we choose Sunset Riders. The side-scroller run-and-gun game touches perfection gameplay-wise. The players take on the role of one of the four bounty hunters, each with a unique design and playstyle. For instance, you have Steve and Billy, who dual-wield revolvers. Speaking of which, check out our friend’s Skyrim guide about dual-wielding.

The other two characters are Bob, who carries a rifle, and Cormano uses a double-barrel shotgun to dispatch enemies. The gameplay of Sunset Riders is simple yet highly enjoyable and will leave players wanting more. The soundtrack is one of the most catchy tunes in gaming history, and we still jam to it.

Nothing much else to say; nostalgia has won over Sunset Riders as one of the most iconic SNES games ever. It’s challenging boss fights, and the thematic setting of Western Wildlands is very unique.

    1. Chrono Trigger – The King of JRPGS and Our Number 1 Pick for the Best SNES Games

    Chrono Trigger

For the final choice and our number 1 pick as the best SNES game ever, we’re going with Chrono Trigger. No other game has had a profound impact on the JRPGS like Chrono Trigger. It’s the benchmark of ideal gameplay, story-telling, classic visuals, and diverging endings in a game. Chrono Trigger, on the surface, seems like an average game. However, when you dive into the game’s story, you’ll understand its depth.

Chrono Trigger captivates players completely with choices that drastically alter the fate of the world. This also includes characters that accompany us during the game’s journey, and even the protagonist isn’t with plot armor. The simplest changes and the order of the missions you do can shape the game’s ending. Chrono Trigger’s combat is tense, especially when you encounter Lavos.

Chrono Trigger is an emotional roller coaster of a video game and quite possibly the best one on the SNES. If you love JRPGS, you owe it to yourself to check out Chrono Trigger. For more suggestions with similar vibes, we point you toward our concise list of the top 4 PS1 JRPGS to tide you over.
