Everything to Know about Cross Progression in Apex Legends

Apex Legends has been out on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation for over three years. In that short time, the game has become the go-to cross-platform shooter. Meanwhile, Respawn Entertainment has added a ton of in-game content, including weapon cosmetics, Legend cosmetics, and other progressive collectibles. Due to this, cross progression in Apex Legends has also been a much-talked-about topic within the player base for some time now.

Despite the requests from the fans, Respawn hasn’t stepped up to introduce a cross-platform progression option into the game. However, this does not mean that an option for cross-progression is uncertain. In fact, Respawn has already confirmed that they are working on Cross Progression. Yet, there is not an exact release date yet.

So here is everything you need to know about the upcoming cross-progression feature on Apex Legends.

    What is Cross-Progression?

Cross-progression generally means being able to keep your in-game progress across multiple platforms on which a game is available. Since Apex Legends is available on many platforms, including PC, PlayStation, Nintendo, and Xbox, having cross-progression will mean that you can keep and enjoy all your progress and rewards when playing on any of the aforementioned platforms using a single account.

Unfortunately, the game does not yet support this feature between PC and consoles. However, it is already available across the platforms accessible by PC. The game was originally exclusive on EA’s official game launcher, Origin, and was later added to Steam.

Since then, if players preferred to play on the Steam platform instead of Origin, they could easily import their progression by simply logging on to their EA account. Likewise, the same can be done across the previous console generations. For instance, you can import your progression from the PS4 or the Xbox One to the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S, respectively.

Conversely, the progression cannot be transferred between wholly different platforms. For example, you cannot import your progression to your PC from the PlayStation, Xbox, or any other console. Respawn has explained why cross-progression isn’t available from the get-go. They said, “users may have multiple accounts to merge or use.”

Since many other similar games like Fortnite and Call of Duty Warzone already feature cross-progression, the matter has been a hot topic in the community for quite some time now.

Is Cross Progression Coming to Apex Legends?

Even though the game currently does not fully support cross-progression, Respawn hasn’t denied that the feature would inevitably come to the game. When the game was launched on Steam alongside the launch of cross-play, cross-platform progression became a hot topic with the community.

Players who were playing on Origin could seamlessly bring their progression over to Steam and switch back and forth with ease. And Apex Legends’ former Game Director, Chad Grenier, commented on cross-platform progression, saying, “It’s something we are very passionate about, and we’re looking at our options available. Much harder post-launch since users may have multiple accounts to merge or use. Easier with Steam because it’s at launch. We’ll give an update when we have something to talk about.”

There have been fewer mentions of the feature since then until recently, when Respawn finally confirmed that cross-progression is set to hit the game in 2022. In an official Reddit AMA back in 2021, a Respawn spokesperson briefly addressed the topic. Apex Legends’ former director of communications, Ryan K. Rigney, stated that the feature is planned to hit the game somewhere in 2022.

He added: “Cross progression is gnarly as hell in terms of being a problem to solve. Not only do you have to solve the technical challenge of merging existing accounts, but there are also legal and contractual issues to navigate with purchasing on other platforms. Different regions have different laws. It’s a mess. But we’re working on it, and we’re committed to delivering it.”

    When will Cross-Progression be Available?

And recently, in an early press and influencer briefing held in late July, Respawn revealed some exciting news about some upcoming features alongside multiple discloses regarding Season 14 prior to its release and significant changes to Kings Canyon. The Q&A not only revealed new info about cross-progression but also revealed an upcoming player gifting feature.

The game’s senior game designer Eric Canavese stated that they are “actively working on gifting to other players right now, but we want to make sure it’s something people enjoy, something that doesn’t feel grindy.” Furthermore, he talked about cross-progression and stated: “We’re actively working on cross-progression, but there’s no release date on it. The game wasn’t built with it in mind, which makes it complicated. But I hear you, and I want cross-progression too. It’s something we’re definitely working on – we want it sooner than later.”

The feature’s development was reportedly pushed back in 2021 due to a series of hacks on Titanfall and Apex Legends. While the more urgent matters were being addressed, the development of the cross-progression feature was further delayed. The feature was simply pushed back to 2022.

And as of today, no specific release date for the feature has still been revealed or hinted at. No information was given even during this Q&A last month (July). And now that the new season, Hunted has finally come to the game alongside all the hinted changes and more, players can be more hopeful of cross-progression coming somewhere in the near future.

Will Apex Legends Cross Progression also come to the Mobile?

The latest game/port in the Apex Legends timeline is Apex Legends Mobile. This version of the popular game was released worldwide earlier this year in May. If you wonder if cross-progression would support the mobile platform and the aforementioned console and PC versions of the game, you are in for some bad news.

The mobile version of Apex Legends is a standalone game that is optimized for touch screens. The mobile game also features game modes and Legends exclusive to smartphones. So this means that you can never bring over your progression from other platforms to mobile or vice versa.

However, you can easily transfer your progress across Android and IOS by simply using a shared log-in option such as Facebook or an EA Account. You should be able to seamlessly switch devices with all of the progress being saved across the two mobile platforms.
