The game Sons of the Forest is full of surprises, exciting moments, gorgeous landscapes, lovable characters, and terrifying creatures lurking in the shadows.

This game is a direct sequel and improvement of its predecessor, The Forest, as it has implemented new and exciting mechanics that keep the experience fresh and fun for both new and veteran players. One of the significant additions to this game is weapons, one of them being a powerful shotgun.

Unfortunately, to get the shotgun, you might have to obtain other items in order to reach it. Once you get the shotgun, you will have to work to find ammo and attachments for it in order to put it to great use.

This article will cover everything you need to know to find the Shotgun in The Sons of the Forest to blast the terrifying cannibals away.

Is the Shotgun Worth it in The Sons of the Forest?

The short answer is that the shotgun is one of the most powerful weapons in The Sons of the Forest. It can take out late-game enemies in a few shots, even in the highest difficulties.

Not only is the shotgun in Sons of the Forest powerful, but if you look in the right place, you can get it fairly early in the game. Especially if you find buckshot ammo, no enemies in this game will stand a chance against you.

    Shotgun Ammo Types

Variety of different types of ammo for the Shotgun in Forest 2 game

Shotgun ammo in Sons of the Forest is easy to find inside crates and briefcases.

There are two types of ammunition for the shotgun in Sons of the Forest.

    • Buckshot: This ammo type is potent and lethal on short distances
    • Slug: Slug ammo allows you to engage enemies at a higher distance but with reduced damage.

How to Find the Shotgun in Sons of the Forest

The Shovel is a crucial item to progress through Sons of the Forest

Finding the location of the shotgun is the easiest thing you will do, as the game tells you right away through your GPS tracker. Unfortunately, however, you will need three items before you can get to it.

    • Rebreather
    • Zipline Rope Gun
    • Shovel

You will need the first two to get the shovel; once you have them, getting the final piece is very straightforward.

    Shotgun Location

Purple markers often contain essential items and weapons.

To find the location, you only need to look for one of the purple GPS Locator markers on the northwest side of the map at the very corner. As you get close, your GPS tracker will constantly beep until you reach the spot.

To identify the specific spot where the shotgun is located, you simply need to look for the grave with a cross made of sticks and cloth. Remember that finding this during winter can be more challenging, as many of the map assets can blend in visually.

Once you have found the grave, you must dig with your shovel until you find your deceased teammate, the shotgun atop his body.

Shovel Location in Sons of the Forest

The shovel is located near the snow-covered area on the west side of the map inside a massive cave. This cave is teeming with enemies, so we recommend that you go in prepared.

Once you are inside the cave, you will have to reach almost the very end until you find a deceased worker with a massive and bright structure behind him. This area is full of enemies, so make sure you are prepared to fight.

Where to Find the Rail for the Shotgun in Sons of the Forest

The Rail Attachment is the first thing you will need to attach any other equipment to your beloved shotgun in The Sons of the Forest.

There are two locations where the actual spawn is, and they are pretty close to each other.

    1. The first spawn location is to the north of the map at a camp on the beach. Head north until you find a military campsite full of crates and supplies. In front of one of the tents, you should be able to find the shotgun rail.
    2. The second spawn is just west of the first location and north of the shotgun spawn point, at a campsite with a few tents, survey equipment, and supply crates. The shotgun rail should be next to a tent, inside an open briefcase.
Navigating through map with gps map

The GPS tracker helps navigate through the map in Sons of the Forest map easily.

How to Use the Shotgun Rail to Customize Your Weapon

To combine the shotgun and the rail, simply click inside the briefcase in your inventory and press the top-right icon that says “Combine.”

You can repeat this process for any attachment you want to add to the shotgun; removing them follows the same procedure.

How to Attach a Flashlight or Laser Sight to the Shotgun in Sons of the Forest

Thankfully, you can share attachments between the pistol and the shotgun, meaning you can use the flashlight or the laser sight on both weapons, but not simultaneously.

Where to find the Laser Sight Attachment for Shotgun in Sons of the Forest Game

The Laser Sight is located in Maintenance Bunker A at a dig site where you need a shovel to unlock the entrance.

Once inside, the laser sight is located in the main room on the desk to the left of the 3D printer location.

Documents can get found around the map with relevant information to the lore.

Once you have acquired the laser sight, combine it with your shotgun in the inventory menu.

The Flashlight Attachment Location in Sons of the Forest

The flashlight that can be attached to customize your shotgun in The Sons of the Forest is located on the west side of the map near the snowy area, inside a cave. You can quickly locate this cave by looking for the three deceased soldiers stuck on spikes.

Note: You can obtain the Slingshot from the soldier stuck in the middle.

If you have acquired the shotgun, you must already have the rebreather for this cave.

Once inside the cave, use your Zipline Rope Gun to reach the next area. Once you drop down, go to the right to collect valuable items, then dive down to find the next cave area.

When you reach the next area, continue exploring the cave until you find a big room with a light at the back. Head towards the body with the small light and pick up the Flashlight Attachment.

This shotgun flashlight attachment will become incredibly useful in The Sons of the Forest, as it can light up your path without wasting batteries while protecting you well.

    Can Virginia Use the Shotgun?

Virginia holding shotgun in Sons of the Forest game

Unlike Kelvin, Virginia can protect you from cannibals and mutants.

Yes, Virginia can use a shotgun and a pistol simultaneously, making her a powerful companion capable of quickly neutralizing any enemies. You will first need to befriend Virginia in The Sons of the Forest before you can arm her or get her to help you.

Fortunately, Virginia won’t need any ammunition, as the ammunition on any weapon you give her is unlimited.

Giving any weapon to Virginia will remove it from your inventory, and if you have attachments on them, they will be despawned, and you will have to look for those attachments again. It is recommended to remove all attachments from your weapons before giving them to Virginia to avoid losing them.
