Greetings to all our fellow PC gaming enthusiasts who love playing space games! Today we’ll settle the matter of the best and worst space games ever on the premier platform. Yes, it’s true, and it’s a decent-sized list of 8 slots, so chances are your favorite game might make it. Fair warning, though, the games we call out and their devs might get the verbal evisceration if they’re deserving of it.

It’s not all bad, however, since we’ll also shower praise on the games that are near and dear to us. So, while we salivate and anticipate the release of Starfield, let’s see which games, so far, are the best of the best and the worst of them all on PC. Well, without further do, let’s not waste a single second and jump into the thick of things immediately.

Our Ranking System of Space Games from the Worst to Best on PC

Well, we feel there should be a clear explanation of how we’ll proceed with the selection process. So, in the interest of fairness and transparency, here are the requirements we look for in space games for PC. If any of them is missing, it’ll either not be in contention or go in the worst category of our list.

    • The first trait we seek in space games on PC is the game’s performance and visuals. Let’s face it; we’re not here to play ugly-looking games or want ones with numerous glitches and bugs.
    • Next, we’re always on the lookout for originality in space games on PC. The more original and unique the idea, the better its chances of finding a slot on the upper half of our list. There is an exception to this rule; if the game can borrow from other titles but bring enough twists to it, then we can also bump it in the rankings.
    • Lastly, the space games on PC should have an intriguing premise that hooks us. The story and gameplay must intertwine and complement each other and not feel jarring or immersion-breaking, kind of like the best space shooters like Marauders.

Which Space Games on PC are the Best and Worst?

Well, now that we’ve thoroughly provided our readers with a concise but in-depth guide regarding the criteria, we can begin. Today’s list has a nice even distribution of a couple of no-brainers and a few surprises to keep you all guessing. These space games left a lasting impression on us, for better or worse, and we’ll let you know our opinion about them. Well, it’s time to begin; here we go!

    8. Destiny 2 – The Hands Down Worst Space Game on PC

Destiny 2 is the worst space game on PC.
Destiny 2 is the prime example of the expression of how the mighty have fallen. Seriously, the game invokes a roller coaster of emotions, people want to like the game, but the dev’s callousness shows they’re dead set on making the most hated PC space game out there.

Kicking things off our list, we have Destiny 2; it’s pretty popular as far as looter shooters go. However, underneath the glamor, it’s more than suitable to sit on the throne of the worst space game on PC. Now, we realize this might seem shocking, but hear us out. The game, in its current state, is abysmal and appalling because its singular focus is on one thing only, microtransactions.

Yes, Destiny 2 has plenty of content for players to try for free. The keyword here is free-to-try, not free-to-play. The game will not open up even the story mode for those unwilling to fork over the dough. Also, the game’s complicated progression system is whole another can of worms. The controversy is never far behind Destiny 2; even its name by the community is Destiny 1.5.

There are improvements and features to like about Destiny 2, but it doesn’t justify its existence. Most of its content could have been part of the first game. Sure, it’s got compelling gameplay, but you’re probably better off playing 15 other awesome games like Destiny 2. Oh, and Destiny 2 is absolutely not new-player friendly, so do yourself a favor and skip this space game on PC.

    7. No Man’s Sky – Once The Novelty of the Game Wears Off, It’s Bare Bones

No Man's Sky is another space game on PC that is all style and no substance.
Don’t let the pretty visuals fool you, there is greatness within No Man’s Sky, but you’ll need to dig deep to find it. There is a lot of potential in the game. We’re glad there have been many improvements since launch, but there’s still something missing that holds it down on our list’s rankings.

Next up, we follow up our list of space games on PC with an entry that’s actually not bad. Well, if you take into context the state of the game at launch, now No Man’s Sky now is a masterpiece. A flawed one, but a masterpiece nonetheless. No Man’s Sky is the kind of game that relies on your enjoyment of the exploration aspect. There’s not much else to the game besides the endless planets.

Sure, the gameplay feels highly original and fun, but the high wears off after a while. You realize No Man’s Sky, while offering plenty of things to do, they’re actually of no consequence.

There is no priority or sense of urgency, and there’s certainly no imminent threat like in other space games on PC. While this makes No Man’s Sky a unique space game, it’s also a bit dull. We have excellent alternatives with a bit more oomph in our list of games like Subnautica.

    6. Kerbal Space Program – A Charming Space Simulation Game But Nothing More

Kerbal Space Program is one the silliest space games on PC.
Comical expressions, animation that is laugh-out-loud worthy, and intriguing gameplay mechanics combine to deliver a satisfying space game on PC. Kerbal Space Program is an absolute joy to play, and even casual players will love the in-depth elements of the game.

The next entry on our list of space games on PC, we take a turn toward the hilarious Kerbal Space Program. The game is a bundle of fun and will have plenty of players rolling on the floor in fits of laughter. Players will love everything, whether it’s the game’s janky physics or the rocket customization to create silly designs. The gameplay might seem simplistic, but it’s got real depth to it.

Sure, the space exploration and flight simulation elements in Kerbal Space Program are magnificent. There’s no doubt about that, but the problem is everything feels silly. That’s not a bad thing; in fact, we love a good dose of laughter from funny PC games. Kerbal Space Program is one of those PC games that you might enjoy playing in shorter bursts than longer ones; still, definitely check it out.

    5. Mass Effect: Andromeda – A Bold New Direction that Remains Underneath Its Predecessor’s Shadow

Mass Effect Andromeda is one the most bold new space games on PC.
The beloved Mass Effect series gets a new installment, but the result is far from what gamers expected. We can’t say we argue with the community here, but over time, we’ve grown to find Mass Effect: Andromeda as a decent follow-up game to the original trilogy of games.

At the halfway mark on our list of space PC games, we present to you Mass Effect: Andromeda. Yes, we know not everyone was fond of the new entry in the beloved franchise. However, after the bug patching and glitch removal, Mass Effect: Andromeda is a highly enjoyable experience. The elephant in the room is that it doesn’t continue the story of Commander Sharphard.

Mass Effect: Andromeda was never meant to be Shephard’s story; it was a new direction for the narrative. Understandably, players weren’t enthusiastic about it, but if you approach the game with an open mind and think of it as not a continuation, you’ll enjoy the PC space game a lot more.

As for the gameplay of Mass Effect: Andromeda, it’s got everything, from open-world exploration with fast-paced combat and an intriguing plotline. If you want more suggestions for space-themed games, check out our sci-fi alternatives to Mass Effect.

    4. The Callisto Protocol – A Fantastic Survival Horror Space Game on PC Worth Playing

    The Callisto Protocol.
The action and atmosphere crank up to 11 with the bone-chilling space horror game on PC, The Callisto Protocol. The horrific and gruesome enemies await players as they navigate the prison on Callisto, Jupiter’s dead moon.

For this slot on our list of top PC space games, we dive into survival horror territory with The Callisto Protocol. The game is every bit as terrifying as the game’s visuals will have you believe. The players must use every tool at their disposal to survive the horrific encounters.

They must also uncover the origins of the supernatural threats plaguing the Black Iron Prison, where the game’s events occur. The enemies are grotesquely horrific and will not hesitate to attack. We recommend The Callisto Protocol to all gamers who love playing terrifying horror games; it’s one of the best PC space games around.

    3. Alien Isolation – The Absolutely Terrifying Alien Will Give Players Panic Attacks

    Alien Isolation
Coming in hot, we’ve got another horror game set in space on PC that will deliver thrills like no other, Alien Isolation. The dread of isolation and the fear of the alien as it stalks the spaceship, ready to hunt down the player at any moment, is what makes Alien Isolation so engrossing.

Calling in the heavy artillery now, as the number 3 entry on our list of space games on PC is Alien Isolation. The game is a constant source of stress for us personally but in a good way. The cat-and-mouse encounters with the Alien and the protagonist Amanda Ripley are top-notch. The faintest of sounds can alert the Alien to Ripley’s position, and then it’s all about finding a way to repel the creature.

You can’t kill the Alien; the game doesn’t allow for that event. The consequence of this is that the Alien will constantly show up to interfere in Amanda’s path. Every sound, every echo feels like a threat as players navigate the tight quarters of the spaceship in the game. Alien Isolation is a worthy space game on PC that gamers shouldn’t sleep on.

    2. Returnal – Our Runner-up Pick for the Best Space Games on PC

    Returnal.
Returnal is a space game that has loads of amazing gameplay elements and even a dash of horror to mix things up! What players experience with Returnal is a truly bizarre sensation that’s hard to put into words, but it’s nothing short of spectacular.

This is the runner-up pick on our list of space games on PC, and we’re glad to introduce Returnal. Don’t let the odd name trick you into writing this game off, as Returnal is an excellent game. Players will experience vastly different worlds as the game-level design has procedural generation. The game is a mix of third-person shooter and bullet hell.

The game’s narrative is mind-bending and can only make sense if they’re able to clear all the stages. Each death results in a respawning in a different world, including new equipment and weapons. Returnal’s mystery element is its most alluring feature and draws players into the plot. If you like games with a juicy hook, you should check out our top story-driven games.

    1. Mass Effect Trilogy – The Best PC Space Game of All Time

    Mass Effect Trilogy.
Once again, here we are at the top spot of a list of space games, and Mass Effect takes the first prize. It’s without question that the trilogy of Mass Effect games has some of the most awe-inspiring moments in the history of gaming.

For the final pick on our list of top space games on PC, no other series deserves this spot than the Mass Effect Trilogy. A saga that spans 3 games and carries over the choices along with their consequences to the finale. It’s a build-up rarely seen in games these days, and we’re proud to have experienced this epic storyline of Commander Shepard.

Players will go on a multiversal journey with various planets serving as pit stops where missions and side activities are aplenty. The goal is to build alliances and go against the mysterious forces that are hellbent on destroying all civilizations. The stakes are high, and there’s never been a better time to jump into the games, with the recently Remastered Mass Effect Legendary Edition getting rave reviews.

For us, Mass Effect Trilogy exemplifies what games are supposed to be. Fun, engaging, endearing, resonating with the player base, and, most of all, spectacularly enjoyable for everyone. Mass Effect Trilogy handily accomplishes this feat and sits at the top of the best PC space games.
